FRIDAY, JUNE 19

Ninja 5K , June 19

Location: Horizon Center,– Novus Drive, Oak Ridge

Register online at www.ninja5k.com. There will be a Martial Arts Demonstration at 7 p.m. Race begins at 8 p.m.  You can dress like a Ninja (no real weapons allowed). Come prepared to walk, run, jump, and kick your way to the finish line! For more information, contact [email protected].

 

Open Painting Studio, June 19

Time: 9:30 a.m.-noon

Non-instructed studio time. Bring all your materials and work at your own pace. Any media.

17th Annual Lavender Festival,– June 20

Location: Historic Jackson Square

Time: 8 a.m. -3 p.m.

Welcome to Summer –Secret City Scenic Excursion Train,– June 20

Train Ride Times: 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m.

This train ride gives you the opportunity to experience the journey enjoyed by travelers during the golden age of rail travel in the 1930’s and 40’s. Passengers will begin their journey back in time abroad Southern Railway coach Fort Oglethorpe, built in 1947. Dinner Train Ride, Welcome to Summer Secret City Scenic Excursion Train,– June 20

Dinner Train Time: 6 p.m.

This train ride gives you the opportunity to experience the journey enjoyed by travelers during the golden age of rail travel in the 1930’s and 40’s. Passengers will begin their journey back in time abroad Southern Railway coach Fort Oglethorpe, built in 1947. On the “dinner train ride”, a delicious dinner prepared by Chef Andras will be served. Oak Ridge Farmers’ Market—Open every Saturday 

Location: 281 Broadway Avenue, Jackson Square

Time: 8 a.m.-noon

Saturday Tennis –Saturday Tennis Group—Every Saturday

Location: Jackson Square Tennis Courts, Broadway Avenue, Oak Ridge

This group meets every Saturday at 9 a.m. during the summer and fall. Community players of all levels are invited. Just show up and ask for the Coordinator Rangan Sukumar; he will get you started with players at your own level. There is no cost. For more information, contact Rangan Sukumar at (865) 474-0519.

 

MONDAY, JUNE 22              

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony,– Curves

Location: 130 Ridgeway Center, Oak Ridge.

Time:  10 a.m. (Ribbon cutting will be at 10:15 a.m.)

Ballroom Dancing—Every Monday, 6:30 p.m.

Location: Wildcat Den Room of the Midtown Community Center

Come join the Secret City Ballroom Dancers every Monday night at 6:30 p.m. for ballroom dancing. Fee:  Admission is $6 on live band nights and $3 on regular Mondays. For more information, contact Ann Stuck at (865) 482-2658 or Patti at (865) 482-3701.

 

TUESDAY, JUNE 23

Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge hosts “Toddlers’ Playtime”—Every Tuesday at 10 a.m.

Location: Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge –Preschool Room

Moms, dads, grandparents, and other caregivers are invited to bring children aged four and younger. The kids can play while the adults visit with each other. Print Making Studio

Oak Ridge Art Center, 201 Badger Avenue, Oak Ridge

Disc Golf:  Random Draw Doubles—Every Tuesday

Location: Carl Yearwood Disc Golf Course, Bus Terminal Road, Oak Ridge

Time: 6 p.m.-8 p.m. This is a challenging but short Par 3 disc golf course. For more information, call (865) 425-3450. This schedule will continue every Tuesday until September 25, 2015.

 

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 24

Oak Ridge Farmers’ Market 

Location: 281 Broadway Avenue, Jackson Square

Wednesday open times: 3 p.m.-6 p.m.

Summer Camps at the ChildrenÂ’s Museum of Oak Ridge through July 31

There are many different types of camps offered this summer at the Children’s Museum! You are sure to find a great camp for your child in the selections offered at the Children’s Museum! They begin in June and continue throughout the summer!

 

AMSE opens three science-themed interactive exhibits —Open now!

American Museum of Science and Energy, 300 South Tulane Avenue, Oak Ridge

Space Exploration, Supercomputing, and Neutron Science are featured in three new “hands-on” exhibits at the Museum! The exhibits showcase national science topics with local ties to research at the U.S. Department of EnergyÂ’’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory. In the Supercomputing Exhibit, visitors can learn about ORNLÂ’s Titan, currently the second most powerful computer in the world! The new Cassini Exhibit features the pioneering spacecraftÂ’s mission to Saturn. In the third Exhibit, visitors can Become a Neutron in an Exhibit that guides people through a simulation of the Spallation Neutron Source, a DOE Office of Science User Facility at ORNL.  The Museum hours are Monday-Saturday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m.-5 p.m. For more information about these new exhibits and other things to see and do at the Museum, visit www.amse.org or call (865) 576-3200.

 

DOE Facilities Public Bus Tour 

June, July, and August: Monday thru Friday

The Bus departs from the American Museum of Science and Energy,– 300 South Tulane Avenue, at noon.

You will explore original Manhattan Project sites around Oak Ridge and learn the history behind the worldÂ’s first atomic weapon which helped to end World War II. U.S. citizens only. Ages 10 and up. For more information, call the American Museum of Science and Energy at (865) 576-3200.

 

Atomic City Fallouts:  Junior Roller Derby (ages 8-17), practices on Thursday nights at Tri County Roll Arena from 6:30pm-8:30pm. If interested, call the rink at (865) 435-9541.

Secret City Bombers: Adult Roller Derby (ages 14 and up), practices on Sunday nights at Tri County Roll Arena at 7 p.m.-9:30 p.m. If interested, send an email to [email protected].

Kids Go Green” classes 

Location: ChildrenÂ’s Museum of Oak Ridge, 461 West Outer Drive, Oak Ridge

TN Creates,– Oak Ridge Art Center—Tuesdays, Saturdays

Location: Oak Ridge Art Center, 201 Badger Avenue, Oak Ridge

Time: 9 a.m.-5 p.m. (M-F); 1 p.m.-4 p.m. (Saturdays)

The Oak Ridge Art Center is a regional museum and teaching facility offering the following activities: free changing exhibits; opening receptions and gallery talks; exciting special events; workshops and classes that include all painting mediums, pottery and sculpture, children’s classes, jewelry fabrication, printing and etching, art appreciation, and many other arts and crafts. Nikon Small World – Traveling Exhibit, AMSE—Through September 13

Location: American Museum of Science and Energy,– 300 South Tulane Avenue

Nikon Small World, a traveling exhibit showcasing 20 award winning photomicrographs from the 40th annual Nikon Small World Photomicrography Competition. For more information, visit www.amse.org or call (865) 576-3200. AMSE is open Monday-Saturday from 9-5 and Sunday from 1-5.

East Tennessee Wanderers Walk, June 27

Join the East Tennessee Wanderers for a Guided 5K/10K (your choice) Secret City Club Walk. We will see the famous “flat-top house” that sprang up when the Secret City was created, historic monuments to the contributions of the Secret City to victory in World War II, the Peace Bell, and Historic Jackson Square. The walk will begin at the American Museum of Science and Energy, 300 South Tulane Avenue, Oak Ridge. The 10K starts at 9:30 a.m. and the 5K begins at 10:30 a.m. A restaurant lunch will follow the walk. For more information, call David at (865) 984-1513 or go to www.easttennesseewanderers.org.

 

Oak Ridge City Fireworks Display,– July 4

Time: 10 p.m.

 

Independence Day Concert – Oak Ridge Community Band – July 4

Location:  A.K. Bissell Park – 1403 Oak Ridge Turnpike.  Time:  7:30pm

The concert will be followed by the annual Oak Ridge City Fireworks Display.  Bring your lawn chair or blanket for outdoor seating.  The concert program will feature special guest vocalists as the band performs patriotic, swing, and show tunes.  Razzleberry’s Ice Cream Lab will provide refreshments.  This is a FREE concert but donations are gratefully accepted to help offset expenses.  For more information, visit www.orcb.org or call 865-482-3568.

This breakfast is a fundraiser for “CONTACT Care Line”.  Fee—$5 per person.
