Ray and Jo Ann Garrett appointed trail stewards

New North Ridge Trail Stewards Ray and JoAnn Garrett have announced that the annual North Ridge Trail/National Trails Day maintenance event will focus on the west portion of the trail, west of Illinois Avenue.

Volunteers should meet at the Garretts’ home at 101 Windham (just off West Outer Drive) at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 6, a press release said.

Oak Ridge leaders JoAnn and Ray Garrett, who are longtime members of Tennessee Citizens for Wilderness Planning, agreed last month to co-steward the North Ridge Trail.

“They are filling the big shoes of out-going Trail Steward Susan Donnelly, who is stepping down due to increased work and life commitments,” the TCWP press release said.

It said the Garretts urge all North Ridge Trail fans, former and current section adopters, and students with service commitments to attend the June 6 event. Participants will carpool from the Garretts to the trail head of the focus area and return to the Garretts about noon.

Those who cannot attend the trail maintenance event are invited to the Garretts about noon to join the trail maintainers for a complimentary, celebratory pizza lunch, the release said. Beer and soft drinks will be available.

Trail maintainers should wear protective clothing (against poison ivy) and shoes, sun block, and bug spray. Clippers and loppers are useful implements to bring, along with drinking water.

The release said trail section adopters are needed. A trail section is adopted for a period of one year, renewable annually. Adopters are asked to inspect their trail sections four times per year. The Garretts want to accent social aspects of trail adoption and are looking forward to enhancing the trail user experience.

For more information, call or write Ray Garrett at (865) 483-4466 or garrett.ray1@att.net.
