Obituary: James Melton Shoopman

James Melton Shoopman, age 81, a resident of Oliver Springs, passed away Thursday, April 9, at Tennova Residential Hospice in Knoxville.

He was a lifelong resident of Oliver Springs and the son of the late Will and Nettie Shoopman.

James was a member of Batley Baptist Church, where he served as deacon and Sunday school teacher. 

Mr. Shoopman served in the armed forces from 1956-1958. He worked at the X-10 Nuclear Plant in Oak Ridge for 42 years as a machinist.

Mr. Shoopman loved to garden and take care of his farm. James married his sweetheart, Barbara Jean Haynes Shoopman, on July 15, 1955. This year would have been their 60th wedding anniversary. Together, they raised three children. James loved spending time with his family.

He is survived by a son, Greg Shoopman and wife Roberta of Florida; by two daughters, Gina Brown and husband Jim of Michigan, and Beth McCoy and husband Ken of Oak Ridge; by a brother, Lowell Shoopman and wife Ruth of Oliver Springs; by a sister, Opal Ruth Woods and husband Richard of Oliver Springs; by two sister-in-laws, Helen Shoopman of Oliver Springs and her late husband Gene Shoopman, and Lois Shoopman and her late husband, Winfred Shoopman; and by a brother-in-law Don Wright of Rockwood and his late wife Nancy.

James is also survived by grandchildren, Sam Shoopman and wife Brooke, of Florida, Andrew Shoopman of Florida, Kaitlin Aurora and husband Mohit of Atlanta, Georgia, Ryan McCoy of Nashville, Amanda Brown, of South Carolina, and Jayden Brown of Michigan.

The family would like to thank the PCM nurses and the staff of Tennova Hospice Residence for their loving care of James.

Services will be held on Saturday, April 11, at Batley Baptist with the Rev. Luke Kidwell and Rev. Lee Hickman officiating. The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. with the funeral services following at 2 p.m. in the church sanctuary. Graveside services will follow at Anderson Memorial Garden.
