Breakfast with Legislators kicks off Monday

This year’s Breakfast with the Legislators kicks off Monday.

Breakfast with the Legislators is a monthly morning meeting with state legislators from Oak Ridge and Anderson and Roane counties. It’s held the first few months each year while the Tennessee General Assembly is in session in Nashville.

It includes brief updates of the legislative session from local legislators and a question-and-answer session with those who attend. It’s open to the public.

“While a good breakfast is considered to be the best way to start the day, attending Breakfast with the Legislators may be the best way to get to know key legislative decision makers and to ask questions on issues moving forward in state government,” a press release said.

Monday’s breakfast is scheduled from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. in the Social Room of the Oak Ridge Civic Center at 1401 Oak Ridge Turnpike.  A free continental breakfast will be served. It’s sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Oak Ridge.

Senators Randy McNally and Ken Yager and representatives John Ragan and Kent Calfee have been invited to speak about the legislative outlook for this session of the Tennessee General Assembly and to respond to questions from the audience. McNally and Ragan are Oak Ridge Republicans, Yager is a Harriman Republican, and Calfee is a Kingston Republican.

McNally represents Senate District 5, which includes Anderson, Loudon, and part of Knox County.

Yager represents Senate District 12, which includes Campbell, Fentress, Morgan, Rhea, Roane, Pickett and Scott counties.

Ragan represents District 33, which includes most of Anderson County.

Calfee represents District 32, which includes parts of Roane and Loudon counties.

The release said the January 26 breakfast marks the beginning of the 28th year that the League of Women Voters of Oak Ridge has held Breakfast with the Legislators.

“Convened on the fourth Monday of every month while the legislature is in session, the popular community event not only offers firsthand information on upcoming legislation and House and Senate committee activities, but prompts dialogue among legislators and citizens and provides a great networking opportunity for members of the community,” the release said.

If the Oak Ridge schools are closed due to bad weather, Breakfast with the Legislators will be canceled.
