Barbara Wingfield Dedrick

Barbara Marie Wingfield Dedrick, of Oak Ridge, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday, October 29, at the home of her daughter, Leslie Dedrick Haag, who resides in Sharpsburg, Georgia.

Mrs. Dedrick was born in Martinsville, Virgina, the daughter of Alonzo Washington Wingfield and Laura Delancey Wingfield.

She was a graduate of Martinsville, Virginia High School and attended Madison State College for Women, now known as James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Martinsville and very active in the First Baptist Church of Oak Ridge, where she taught Sunday school. She worked for many years at the Bank of Oak Ridge. She enjoyed volunteering in the Oak Ridge school system and was very active in the Camp Fire Girls program. She was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution Clinch Bend Chapter. She was chairman of the Good Citizens Scholarship Committee, visiting many area high schools to gather information about worthy potential recipients.

After retirement, she enjoyed traveling to many countries including visiting her daughter and grandsons in France and vacationing with her family at Surfside Beach, South Carolina. When not traveling, she enjoyed working in her yard and reading. She was a member of the Wingfield Family Society, which studies the ancestry of her family, which counts among its members the first president of the Jamestown Colony.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe C. Dedrick; her brothers, A. Sim Wingfield, L.W. Wingfield Jr., and Ben R. Wingfield; and sister Elizabeth Neal; and her son-in-law Jacques Kerguelen.

Barbara is survived by daughters, Leslie Haag and husband Preston of Sharpsburg, Georgia, Beverly Kerguelen of Fresnes, France, and Diana Ogul and husband James of Frederick, Maryland; six grandchildren, Laura and Trey Haag, Joe and Jason Kerguelen, and Tim and John Ogul; and two great-grandchildren, Josh and James Kerguelen. Her surviving sisters are Virginia “Boots” Coley of Roanoke, Virginia, Dorothy Bryson of Martinsville, Virginia, and Joy Philpott of Basset, Virginia.

The memorial service will be held Sunday, November 2, at 11 a.m. at Weatherford Mortuary with Pastor Preston Haag Jr. officiating, followed by a private graveside service.
