Henry Clinton “H.C.” Shanks

Henry Clinton Shanks, of Oak Ridge, answered the call of his Lord to join Him in His heavenly home October 24, 2014.

Henry was born to Neal and Willie Ann Alvis Shanks on November 20, 1918, in Rogersville, Tennessee.

“H.C.,” as he was often called, was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Navy. He was a retiree after 39 years working for Union Carbide Nuclear Corporation as a boiler operator at the K-25 facility, and he was a long-time member and deacon of Woodland Park Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 34 years, Selma Self Shanks; siblings, Claude, Fred, Clarence, Neal Jr., Will, Louise, and Leona; and grandson, Michael Childs.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Ruby M. Shanks, of Oak Ridge; sons, Raymond Shanks, and Brian Shanks and wife Carol, all of Oak Ridge; stepsons, Mitchell Childs and wife Morgan of Knoxville, Phil Childs and wife Linda of Clinton, and Jeff Childs and wife Becky of Harriman; stepdaughter, Gwen Lawson and husband Fred of Harriman; sister, Nettie Carpenter of Rogersville; grandchildren, Shaun Shanks and wife Andrea, Stacie Shanks, Daniel Childs and wife Jennifer, Stephen Childs and wife Kate, and Jessica Bedard and husband Drew; great-grandchildren, Charlotte Elizabeth Shanks, Hayden and Zack Childs, Claire and Evan Bedard, and Emma Childs; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, October 29, 2014, from 11 a.m. till 12:30 p.m. at Weatherford Mortuary. The funeral service will begin at 12:30 p.m. with Rev. Tim Kimsey officiating. The interment will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.

It was H.C.’s request that any memorials be made to the American Heart Association in memory of his grandson, Michael.
