Iddins promoted to associate director of REAC/TS

Dr. Carol J. Iddins has been named associate director of the Radiation Emergency Assistance Center/Training Site, or REAC/TS. In this position, Iddins will provide management and medical leadership, participate in all aspects of emergency response planning, and manage all professional and technical activities of radiation emergency management and REAC/TS.

Iddins has more than 20 years of experience in civilian and military medicine, with extensive knowledge of nuclear accident response.

Iddins has worked for five years as a staff physician at REAC/TS, serving as a subject matter expert for patients with radiological injuries and illnesses and for disaster medicine readiness, preparedness, and education.

Prior to joining Oak Ridge Associated Universities, Iddins served as a staff physician for the Methodist Medical Center Healthworks and Roane Industrial Medicine where she performed occupational health surveillance physicals, conducted respirator and beryllium surveillance clearances, and supervised nurse practitioners. Iddins also has held positions at Concentra Medical Center and multiple air force bases where she assisted in combat search and rescue, provided emergency response for aircraft mishaps, and acted as on-scene medical director for nuclear weapons accident response exercises.

Iddins holds an M.D. and a bachelor’s in nutrition from the University of Tennessee. She performed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga and has completed numerous training courses as part of the military.

Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) is a U.S. Department of Energy institute focusing on scientific initiatives to research health risks from occupational hazards, assess environmental cleanup, respond to radiation medical emergencies, support national security and emergency preparedness, and educate the next generation of scientists. ORISE is managed by Oak Ridge Associated Universities.

REAC/TS is an Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education facility managed by ORAU for the U.S. Department of Energy with the mission to strengthen the medical response to radiological and nuclear incidents. REAC/TS provides 24/7 medical support and deployment to provide emergency medical consultation for incidents involving radioactive materials and ionizing radiation worldwide. REAC/TS also conducts ongoing research into the biological effects of radiation and provides continuing medical education for healthcare providers.
