Helen Lucille Schultz Lowery

Helen Lucille (Schultz) Lowery, 87, of Oak Ridge, went to be with her Lord and Savior at her home on Saturday, September 6.

She was born on January 6, 1927 in Talbott, Tennessee, to the late Preston Monroe Schultz and Dora K. (Knight) Schultz. She was the last surviving of nine brothers and sisters.

She graduated from Morristown East High School in 1945, after which she came to Oak Ridge, working as a “Calutron Girl” at Y-12. She also worked at X-10 and K-25. On May 27, 1950, she married James Keith Lowery from Morristown.

A very active member of the Republican Party, she served as chairman of the Republican Party of Anderson County, secretary of Anderson County Election Commission, and vice president of the Election Commissioners East Tennessee State Board. She was honored on several occasions for her service, most recently receiving a “Lifetime Achievement” plaque presented by Zach Wamp and “Republican Woman of the Year” in 2012.

She was most proud of her membership as president of the Republican Women of Anderson County. As a charter member in 1959, this chapter grew to a high of 144 members during her presidency and won the Tennessee Federation of Republican Women’s Growth Award. In 2011, she took on the challenge of bringing back the charter not only in Oak Ridge, but all of Anderson County.

During her life in Oak Ridge, she also participated in the Carbide Wives, Home Demonstration Club, Lioness Club, PTA, Girl Scouts, Band Parents, 4-H Club, Anderson County Fair, Parkinson Support Group, and Beryllium Support Group. She was a charter member of the Cold War Patriots.

She was a long time member of Glenwood Baptist Church. She loved the Lord, and she loved her church family dearly.

She loved gardening, arts, and crafts, and cooking for her family.

She is predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Keith, and daughter Rita Lowery Anderson.

She is survived by daughter Sandra Lowery Boldu and son-in-law Jose Luis; granddaughters, Elena Boldu-Lowery and Aislin Kate Anderson; son-in-law Bill Anderson, step-grandchildren Jennifer Anderson McLeod with her husband Jay, and David Anderson; and step-great-grandson Walden McLeod, as well as several beloved nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a very special thanks to the entire team of Professional Case Management nurses, whose love and care for Helen throughout her illness is deeply appreciated. You have become part of our family. A special thanks to Neva Morann of Brightstar and the staff at Amedisys Hospice.

Visitation with the family will be Friday, September 12, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home, with the funeral service following at 7:30 p.m. with Dr. Mark Walton officiating. Interment will be Saturday, September 13, at 1 p.m. at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made out to Glenwood Baptist Church.

Online messages may be left at www.martinfuneralhomeoakridge.com. Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home is serving the Lowery family.
