Mary Kathryn “Kay” Barger

Mary Kathryn “Kay” Barger, age 90, of Oak Ridge, passed away Wednesday, August 27, at Briarcliff Health Care Center.

She was born June 15, 1924, in Cookeville, the daughter of Mack and Nevada Stone Vickers.

She was a life-long member of Robertsville Baptist Church. Mrs. Barger enjoyed flower gardening and was known for her “green thumb” and success of beautiful gardens. She also enjoyed traveling and taking trips.

Her main focus in life was nurturing her family, which she loved dearly. In earlier years, she was active with many area bowling leagues. She was a loving, caring, and dedicated mother, grandmother, and friend and will be sadly missed.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husband, Alfred Thurman Barger; sisters, Clio Vaughn, Alda May Lehman, and Beatrice Vaughn; and brothers, Marvin, Bill, and Bob Vickers.

She is survived by sons, Steven Edward Barger (Ann) of Oak Ridge, and Jerry Wayne Barger of Fort Rucker, Alabama; grandchildren, Jeffrey Barger and wife Beverly of Powell, and Scott, Jerrie Lynn, and Cindy Barger, all of Fort Rucker, Alabama; one great-granddaughter, Natalee Barger; Kay’s special friend, Ann Stephens; and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express their appreciation to Briarcliff Health Care Center for the care and compassion shown to their mother.

The family received friends on Friday, August 29, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Weatherford Mortuary. The funeral began at 1 p.m. with Rev. Brian Scott officiating. Interment followed at Anderson Memorial Gardens.

The family asks that any memorial contributions be made to Alzheimer’s Tennessee Inc., PO Box 10088, Knoxville, TN 37939-9910.
