Roy Franklin Burney, age 62, a resident of Oliver Springs, passed away Wednesday, June 4, 2014, at Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge.

Mr. Burney was born March 17, 1952, in Oliver Springs. He was a lifelong resident.

Mr. Burney worked as a coal miner for Jackson Mining Company, as a bus driver for the Roane County School System, and he volunteered as a fire fighter for both the Oliver Springs and Blair fire departments.

Roy was a member of the Union Valley Baptist Church, and his hobbies included drag racing, restoring and repairing vintage cars, and his greatest enjoyment was spending time with his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, J.H. Burney and Sarah Jackson Burney; by grandparents, Frank and Sarah Burney, and Willie and Martha Jackson; and by a step-grandmother, Myrtle Jackson.

He is survived by, and will be missed by, his wife of 39 years, Patsy Jean Burney; by sons, Greg Burney and wife Diana, and William Burney and wife Brooke; and by grandchildren: Travis, Morgan, and Sarah Burney all of Oliver Springs. He is also survived by brothers, including a twin brother, Troy Burney and his wife Annette, Donnie Burney and wife Linda, and Stanley Burney and wife Sandy, all of Oliver Springs.

Additionally, he is survived by sister and brother-in-laws, the Tucker family, by several nieces, nephews, a special nephew, Scott, extended family, a host of special friends, and also his dog, Brutus.

The family received friends, Saturday, June 7, 2014, between 5 and 8 p.m. at the New Fairview Baptist Church. The funeral followed at 8 p.m. in the church with Pastor John Edwards and Pastor Wayne Morgan officiating. Burial and graveside services were held, Sunday, June 8, 2014, at 4 p.m. at the Mount Pisgah Cemetery.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the Methodist Medical Center 5 West, and the Anderson County Medical Service Medic No. 4.
