Six Clinton firefighters are now certified in advanced vehicle extrication. Clinton Fire Department Capt. Anthony Braden, Lt. Bradley Allen, Lt. Josh Bray, Firefighter Brad Bittinger, Firefighter J.C. Townsend, and Firefighter Brice Kidwell completed 20 hours of advanced level training in Cookeville, Tenn.
“In addition to being better prepared to handle most any emergecy extrication situation, all six members are now eligible to become trainers in the level of basic vehicle extrication,” Fire Chief Archie Brummitt said.
Both classroom lectures and “hands on” field training were part of this course. Classroom lectures included information about advanced steels and structural components of vehicles, hybrid and electric vehicle awareness and assessment, airbags and other hazards with cars of today and of the near future.
The field exercise evolutions included several techniques using minimal tools and limited personnel. Some examples of these are: “cracking the egg†scenario, alternative hard car extrication techniques, stabilization using rescue struts, advanced stabilization and tunneling, lifting a car on its side off a victim using rescue jacks and airbags, display of cross ram technique on collapsed side impact collision, display of “rip n blitz†complete side removal, display of front passenger airbag deployment using rescue dummy, and also a display of curtain airbag deployment.
