Obituary: Johnnie Jackson Turnbill

Johnnie Jackson Turnbill, age 81, a resident of Harriman, passed away Friday, May 30, 2014, in Springfield, Missouri.

Mr. Turnbill was born July 7, 1932, in the lower camp of Windrock Mountain. At the age of 18, he moved to Dayton, Ohio, and began his employment with General Motors. He continued his employment in the Delco Production Division of GM until his retirement in 1982.

Following his retirement, he moved back to Tennessee, where he enjoyed renewing old acquaintances, spending time with family, and being outside.

Mr. Turnbill was preceded in death by his parents, John William Turnbill and Dollie Hoskins Turnbill; by his daughter, Regina Turnbill; by brothers, Ben and Byrd Turnbill; and by his sisters, Bernice Phillips and Lucille McGhee.

In addition to his wife of 40 years, Wanda Miles Turnbill, he is survived by a daughter, Martha June Surrette and husband Jay of Springfield, Mo.; by sons, Gary Turnbill and wife Peggy, of Dayton, Ohio, and Jeff Turnbill of Amarillo, Texas; by stepdaughters, Carolyn Sharp and husband Larry of Clinton, and Lisa Richey and husband Tony of Powell; by a stepson, Dan Harness of Clinton; and by several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by a sister, Rema Beasley of Oliver Springs, and by several nieces, nephews, extended family members, and special friends.

The family will receive friends Friday, June 6, 2014, between 6 and 8 p.m. at Sharp Funeral Home. The funeral will follow at 8 p.m. in the funeral home chapel, with Rev. Terry Braden officiating. Burial and graveside services will be held Saturday, June 7, 2014, at noon, at the Oliver Springs Cemetery.
