There is a free Document Shred Day from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Millertown Pike and Oak Ridge branches of ORNL Federal Credit Union.

It’s a partnership between ORNL FCU and Cintas Document Management Co., and it’s open to ORNL FCU members as well as the public.

People can bring unwanted documents, especially ones containing personal information, to one of the Document Shred Day locations and have it safely and securely destroyed at no charge, a press release said. A maximum of four boxes/bags per person will be accepted.

ORNL FCU’s Millertown Pike Branch is located at 5409 Millertown Pike in Knoxville and the Oak Ridge Branch is located at 221 S. Rutgers Ave.

According to authorities, crimes of identity theft are a growing problem as a person’s identity can easily be stolen simply because they’ve placed personal documents in the garbage rather than having them properly destroyed, a press release said.

“Thieves will rummage through garbage looking for anything to create a new identity for committing crimes,” said Bronce Rodgers, vice president of loss mitigation at ORNL FCU. “The most common forms used for identity theft are credit card applications, bank statements, or completed tax forms, and the stolen information can then be used for a variety of fraudulent transactions.”
