Obituary: Loretta Smith Hopwood

Loretta Smith Hopwood, dedicated Christian mother, grandmother, sister and friendly neighbor, went to be with her Savior on March 17, surrounded by loved ones in Oak Ridge.

She was born on Aug. 21, 1922, in Pathfork, Ky., the daughter of Bradley and Elizabeth “Lizzie” Smith Hunley.

Mrs. Hopwood was a faithful member of Central Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for many years.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, F. T. Hopwood; and brothers, Kenneth Smith, Paul Hunley, Mitchell Hunley, and Tucker Smith.

She is survived by sons, Tommy Hopwood and wife Letha, of Birmingham, Ala., and Jerry Hopwood and wife Faye, of Oliver Springs; brothers, Britt Hunley, Grover Hunley, and Hubert Hunley; grandchildren and their spouses, Angel and Steve Laughter, Brett Hopwood, Colleen Hopwood, Shannon and Bianca Hopwood, and Sherry and Robert Broaddus; great-grandchildren, Rachel Hopwood, Matthew Payne, Brock Laughter, Jordan Payne, Matthew Laughter, Christian Hopwood, Blake Broaddus, Brent Broaddus, and Breanna Broaddus; and great-great grandchild, Ashton Whalen.

The family received friends on Thursday, March 20, from 12 to 2 p.m. at Weatherford Mortuary. Following the visitation, family and friends gathered at 2:30 p.m. for a graveside service at Anderson Memorial Gardens with Rev. Glenn Ellis and Rev. Robbie Leach officiating. Serving as pallbearers were Brett Hopwood, Shannon Hopwood, Steve Laughter, Matthew Payne, Brock Laughter, Robert Broaddus, Blake Broaddus, Brent Broaddus, and Matthew Laughter.

The family asks that any memorials be in the form of contributions in her memory to the Food Ministry or the Back-country Mexico Missions of Central Baptist Church.
