Elmer Hayes Smith, age 75, of Coalfield, passed away at his home on Sunday, March 2.
He served our country in the U.S. Navy then returned to Coalfield to work with his father in coal mining. Later, he moved to Michigan where he worked and retired from General Motors after 40 years service, then moved back to Coalfield with his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Ida (Burgess) Smith; sisters, Betty, Patricia, and Cheryl Smith, June Hammons, and Lucille Seiber; and brother, Howard Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Jennifer Smith; daughter, Sandra Smith, and son, Jeff Smith; brother, Freddy and wife Helen Smith, all of Coalfield; and a host of other family members and friends.
A memorial service with military honors will be held at Middle Creek Baptist Church in Coalfield on Tuesday, March 11, beginning at 12 p.m. Bro. Ronald Guthrie will officiate.
