Bojangles'

Bojangles’ restaurant will open on South Illinois Avenue in Oak Ridge on Friday, Dec. 27.

Bojangles’ restaurant will open in Oak Ridge on Friday, Dec. 27.

The new restaurant is at 490 S. Illinois Ave., just south of the former Dean Stallings Ford.

The company said Bojangles’ is “a Southern-style restaurant famous for serving made-from-scratch biscuits, hand-breaded chicken, and mouth-watering breakfast all day.”

Bojangles’ is offering $100 gift cards to the first 100 customers at 5 a.m. Dec. 27, and one lucky customer will win free breakfasts for a year, a press release said.

Bojangles’ is also offering a free 22 oz. Legendary Iced Tea at the drive-through window a day earlier, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 26.

“Bojangles’ is eager to open our first restaurant in Oak Ridge and introduce this community to our Southern hospitality and hand-crafted menu items,” said Bojangles’ Regional Vice President Dion Firooznia. “We encourage everyone who has never tried Bojangles’ to come out, meet our local team and taste what ‘Bo Time’ is all about.”

Bojangles’ new company-owned restaurant in Oak Ridge represents a continued economic investment in the area, the press release said. The average investment made by the company for new locations is $1.7 million, and each new store creates an average of 80-90 jobs. As part of Bojangles’ expansion in East Tennessee, Bojangles’ also opened a new restaurant in Crossville, Tenn., in December.

The Oak Ridge restaurant is more than 3,800 square feet, will seat more than 75 customers, and serve all menu items—including the breakfast—from 5 a.m. until 10 p.m. seven days a week.

Bojangles’ was founded in 1977 in Charlotte, N.C. The company now has more than 550 locations in 10 states, primarily in the Southeast, and the District of Columbia as well as three international restaurants. Visit www.bojangles.com for more information.

I’ve never worked in the fast food business, but I find it hard to believe each store employs 80-90 people. I hope somebody corrects me.

A new Golden Corral is opening in Las Vegas, where I formerly lived, that will employ 207 people(http://www.reviewjournal.com/business/golden-corral-opening-las-vegas-207-new-workers). Given that there will be someone in Bojangles for 19 hours a day (5 am to 10 pm plus a couple of extra hours for setup and cleanup), 80 to 90 doesn’t seem unreasonable.

There was a Bojangles restaurant on Ill. Ave back in the 70’s or early 80’s.

I think it was Popeye’s….or maybe Bojangles? I love the spicy chicken but don’t know if enough people in Oak Ridge like it enough for 2 similar restaurants. Of course, most of the eating places in Oak Ridge cater to the lunch crowd.

It was BoJangles. It was in the same building that now houses Buddy’s BBQ.

80-90 employees is right, because companies these days will not let an employee work 40 hrs, they have to hire 2 to 3 people to equal 1 person working 40 hours.

I don’t have anything against Bojangles or the people who eat there, but I wish they did offer some healthier options like grilled chicken and low sodium vegetables. I’m in my mid-30’s and had a heart attack earlier this year, and I think eating at places like this on a regular basis was definitely one of the factors that caused it. Subway is just about the only restaurant in Oak Ridge that has a heart healthy menu (low sodium/fat/cholesterol). It’s really shocking now to look at the Bojangles nutrition menu and see that a three piece dinner has 4,241 mg of sodium. That’s almost three times the daily recommended value of 1,500!

If more of us paid attention to restaurant nutrition menus, I imagine that all restaurants would reduce the sodium levels — not to mention the calorie content — of their offerings.

I have received information from a reader that there was a Bojangles in Oak Ridge in 1983 and 1984, when the reader worked there, and it was about where McDonald’s is now on South Illinois Avenue.
