Sylvestia Hardy Hopper departed this earthly life on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2013, following several years battling Alzheimer’s.
She was born in Briceville, Tenn., the youngest of eight girls to the union of Joe and Mary Moore Hardy.
Mrs. Hopper was preceded by her loving husband, Benton Hopper; son, Jimmie Hopper; and by sisters, Eva Hardy, Estella Hardy Cross, Elizabeth Hardy, Irene Cobbs, Annie Wyatt, Hattie Phipps, and Mary Ellen Hardy.
She was a faithful and dedicated member of Little Leaf Missionary Baptist Church. She enjoyed quilting, feeding the farm hands, playing the organ, attending patiently to the grandchildren, and she had a great love for animals. She was lovingly known as “Big Valley” by Richard (Tony) Goins Jr.
She leaves to mourn: Jack (Glenda) Hopper, Sharon Hopper-Goins, Phillip Hopper and Mona Lisa Hopper, all of Oliver Springs, sisters-in-law, Nannie Hopper of Oliver Springs, and Amanda Harper of Los Angeles, Calif.; daughters-in-law, Pamela Hopper of Oak Ridge and Freda Hopper of Oliver Springs; by grandchildren, Jacqueline Williams and Shawna (Jimmy) Morgan of Oliver Springs, Kevin Hopper of Knoxville, and Evelyne Russell of Los Angeles, Calif.; Jamie Hopper and Heather Hopper both of Oak Ridge, Richard Goins III and Tia Goins of Oliver Springs, Alex Hopper, Meghan Hopper, Chesley, Amber and Rue Eskridge III, all of Oliver Springs; and by a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives, and other special friends.
Cherished memories will remain with her loving cousins, the Phipps, Griffins, and Fletchers.
The Hopper family received guests on Saturday, Nov. 9, between 12 and 2 p.m. at Sharp Funeral Home. The funeral followed at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel, with Pastor Steve McDonald officiating. Interment and graveside services followed at the Carters Bluff Cemetery in Oliver Springs.
