David Neusel, the owner and operator of Big Ed’s Pizza in Jackson Square, died Thursday. The front of the landmark restaurant is pictured above.

Melissa Neusel, the wife of Big Ed’s Pizza owner David Neusel, released a statement Saturday on his death, funeral plans, and the future of the restaurant.

She said her husband, who was 60, died at 1:30 p.m. Thursday of heart and kidney failure at St. Thomas West Hospital in Nashville. That was caused by a virus that had settled in and weakened his heart about two years ago, Melissa Neusel said.

She said Big Ed’s Pizza will remain open and continue operating normally, other than on funeral day(s).

Following her husband’s cremation, the funeral is planned for Monday, Nov. 4, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at 327 Vermont Ave. in Oak Ridge with the Rev. Fr. Michael Woods officiating:

  • The receiving of friends is from 4-7 p.m.
  • The funeral Mass is from 7–8 p.m.
  • There is a reception and additional receiving of friends from 8–10 p.m.

There will be a military service on Veterans Day, Monday, Nov. 11, although those plans are incomplete at this time.

“On behalf of the family, friends, and all the Big Ed’s Pizza employees, I would like to thank everyone, including the doctors and nurses who so compassionately cared for David, for the tremendous outpouring of love and support we have received,” Neusel said. “In lieu of flowers, please contribute to the charity of your choice in David’s name.”
