John A. “Smokey” Diggs of Clinton, passed away peacefully Saturday, Oct. 19, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge following a brief illness.
He was born in 1939 to Margaret “Mutt” Cox Diggs and Arville Frank Diggs, both of whom preceded him in death.
He was a graduate of Lake City High School and Carson Newman College. He taught and coached football at Coalfield High School and Lake City High School. He and his wife, Linda, opened the stained glass studio, Pieces of Glass, in Oak Ridge in 1982.
Although retired, he continued to work part-time in the business.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Lundy Diggs; devoted daughter, Tara Lynn Diggs; and beloved grandson and buddy, Alexander Caleb, both of Charlotte, N.C.
He is also survived by his sister, Susie Diggs Hughes and husband Gail Hughes of The Villages, Fla.; niece, Misty Hughes Pitts and husband Leonard, of Marietta, Ga.; nephew, Edward Hughes and wife Lynn, of Charlotte, N.C.; three great-nieces, Emily Hughes, Kerri Hughes, and Nicole Pitts; brothers-in-law, Steve Lundy (Jeannine) of Yadkinville, N.C., and Bruce Lundy (Jan) of Yadkinville, N.C., John Lundy (Martha) of Statesville, N.C.; and sisters-in-law, Anne Lundy Poole (Fred) of Harmony, N.C., and Jeanne Lundy McLelland (Thad) of East Bend, N.C.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 26, at 2 p.m. at First Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Oak Ridge (127 Lafayette Drive) conducted by Rev. Jim Buttram. The family will greet friends following the service.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the education fund of his grandson, Alex, (Education Fund/Alex) in care of Anne Lundy Poole, 3074 Harmony Highway, Harmony, NC 28634 or to the church or charity of your choice.
The family would like to thank the doctors and staff of Methodist Medical Center and Thompson Cancer Survival Center and the hospital volunteers for their care and dedication.
