Dubbed “one of the best folk-rock artists in the country,” transgender artist Namoli Brennet will be in concert at 7 p.m. Friday at Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church.
The church is located at 1500 Oak Ridge Turnpike. Tickets are $12 or $10 for students and may be purchased at the door or online at www.oruuc.org/events/.
Brennet’s gritty, honest folk sound has attracted a large fan base, a press release said.
“Touching on often poignant themes, her music and lyrics ultimately paint a vivid and redemptive portrait,” it said. “She has been described as a breathtaking and moving performer, a cross between Lucinda Williams, Patty Griffin, and Sheryl Crow. Zocalo magazine called her music ‘gorgeous and introspective.'”
The Tucson-based songwriter was given her first guitar at age 8, and after picking it up quickly she started playing drums, piano, and saxophone. By the time she graduated from college with a degree in music composition, she was waiting tables while writing songs on the side and playing in local bands. She didn’t start singing until her 20s, because, as she says, “I was surrounded by golden-throated sisters and wasn’t really considered the singer in my family. My voice was always…different.”
