Sewer rehab work starting in east Oak Ridge

Posted at 6:00 pm September 5, 2013
By City of Oak Ridge 7 Comments

Within the next week, residents and businesses located in the east end of Oak Ridge should be receiving an information letter in the mail from the City of Oak Ridge concerning sewer rehabilitation work in the area. The letter is on orange paper and provides general information concerning the sewer work.

Hurst Excavating LLC is currently conducting preconstruction work in the area. This work includes tasks such as locating manholes and walking the terrain of the area, so residents may see workers in their yard or along the greenbelt.

The work area is located east of California Avenue, west of Georgia Avenue, south of Outer Drive, north of Oak Ridge Turnpike and a small section of Emory Heights on Dayton Road and Daniel Lane.

Questions or comments can be directed to the Oak Ridge Public Works Department via e-mail at pubworksdis@oakridgetn.gov or by calling and leaving a message at (865) 425-3495.

“east of California Avenue, west of Georgia Avenue”

Is this backwards? Doesn’t make sense.

I’m not sure, Andrew. I’ll ask the city staff if they meant there are separate work areas in those different locations, or if there is just one big work area.

How many companies are doing this work? I’ve seen different people messing with the sewer up here on east drive multiple times. As a citizen, I’m a bit concerned about the professionalism of whatever company is doing the work. I’ve seen no uniforms, no signs on vehicles as to the company’s name.

I do not know the name(s) of the company(ies) involved, but I’ll see what I can find out.

Various sewer work was completed in my area in the Hendrix Creek subdivision last year and yes, I too noticed that there are several different groups doing different tasks. However, I was able to monitor much of what was accomplished and was on scene when my sewer lateral was being repaired where it connects to the city main. As a person with over 33 years of plumbing and pipe fitting experience I can say that the work was completed with expertise, professionalism and with the customer in mind. I did not show the workers my Master Plumbing License until they finished the work. They assumed I was just another curious citizen. Based on my observations, I think we are all getting a job well done.

Well good deal, maybe these guys will make enough money to buy some signs for their trucks 🙂

    Andrew and Joshua,

I did check with Gary Cinder on this work. He said it should have been west of California and east of Georgia, but the letters have already gone out to residents so the wording in the press release is a moot point now.

The contractor is Hurst Excavating. They subcontract out the work they are not equipped to do. Cinder said Hurst does good work, and the workers he has seen have been identified. Joshua, maybe it’s possible that you’ve seen some of the subcontractors.
