Exercise for Fitness
Location: Oak Ridge Civic Center
The Oak Ridge Recreation and Parks Department is sponsoring “Exercise for Fitness”, an adult exercise program taught by Charlotte Hensley. The class meets at the Oak Ridge Civic Center on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings from 9-10:30am. This well balanced program offers exercise routines that include stretching, toning, Pilates, and aerobics. The instructor incorporates the use of a variety of equipment including fitness balls, hand weights, steps, and hoops to provide a comprehensive workout for each participant. Participants may register for the class at the Civic Center Information desk from 8am to 10pm Monday through Saturday. The cost for the class is $30 per month or $5.00 per class. Summer classes at the Oak Ridge Art Center
Several different media and types of painting and drawing are offered in the summer schedule. Some classes deal with one medium only, while others will offer instruction that relates to several specific media, or a mix of them. Tuition is $100 for non-members and $80 for members, unless specified otherwise. Students will be responsible for bringing their own materials and supplies and should be prepared to work at the first session. DOE Facilities Bus Tour – thru August 30

Soul Candy & the Traffic Jam – Secret City Sounds Concert – August 9
(This concert replaces “Dishwater Blonde” who had to cancel do to unforeseen circumstances). The concert will begin at 7pm at the Oak Ridge Civic Center Pavilion located at 1403 Oak Ridge Turnpike. This is a free event so bring a blanket or a chair and set up on the lawn behind the pavilion at Bissell Park for a great night of music! “The Other One” will be offering delicious food items, Razzleberry’s will be selling ice cream from the pig mobile, and the Arts Council will have a variety of beverages available. Geocaching Workshop for Kids – August 9
Location: UT Arboretum – 901 S. Illinois Avenue, Oak Ridge. Time: 9:00am – 1:00pm
This is an introductory class on geocaching, the worldwide treasure hunting game. You will learn the basics of using a GPS device, determining your location, inputting waypoints, following a device, short course, hiding a cache, and finding caches hidden by others! Arboretum Society Board Member, Janet Bigelow will be teaching this workshop with assistance from other UTAS members. The workshop is open to 5th-8th grade students. Do not bring a GPS device, as one will be provided to you so all in workshop will have identical devices to use. Snacks, drinks, and small “treasures” will be provided, but participants need to bring a sack lunch and rain gear. Cost is $10 and is payable in advance. Community-wide invitation! Creation Care in Oak – August 18
“Bill McKibben” (the planet’s best green journalist as stated by Time Magazine) will present: “Keep the Faith and Do the Math” which focuses on fossil fuel combustion and its link to climate change. Bill’s presentation will begin at 7:00pm at the Oak Ridge High School Auditorium (1450 Oak Ridge Turnpike). This is a FREE event! There will also be a Pre-event, a 100-mile potluck dinner for the entire community! This will take place on August 18 from 1:00-3:00. Oak Ridge Secret City Photographic History Exhibit – thru August 7
Location: Museum of East Tennessee History – 601 S. Gay Street, Knoxville.
This exhibit is provided by the Y-12 National Security Complex History Center. It has appeared at a number of prominent venues, most recently at the National Archives and Records AdministrationÂ’s Southeast Region branch in Atlanta. The photographs, many by the Manhattan Project official photographer Ed Westcott, give visitors a firsthand look at life in the Secret City, the war effort, the Cold War, and ongoing research and technology. Days of the Pioneer Antique Show – Museum of Appalachia – September 13-14
