Angela Loy felt stuck.
She had a stable job with good pay, but Loy wanted a change, a chance to follow her passion for caring for others.
That feeling led her to Roane State Community College, and now she is on her way to Lincoln Memorial University on a full tuition scholarship as the recipient of the 2013 Lincoln Memorial University transfer scholarship.
“I have a special, special place in my heart for the elderly,” said Loy, who plans to pursue an associate of science in nursing at Lincoln Memorial. “They are the forgotten generation.”
Loy, 44, of Knoxville started at Roane State in spring 2012 and finished this spring. Becoming a student again in her 40s was scary at first, she said.
“Terrifying, you feel like a fish out of water,” Loy said of her first few days of classes. “The hardest part is walking into that classroom the first time. You feel like everybody is staring at you. And then it all subsides. You realize that these kids around you, they accept you, and the faculty have been nothing but wonderful. I fell in love with Roane State. I was so comfortable here. You just pull in the parking lot, and you are comfortable.”
Now, just a year later, Loy is on her way to a four-year college and one step closer to fulfilling her dream.
“It’s empowering,” she said. “This has been such a confidence booster.”
Roane State is a two-year college providing transfer curricula, career-preparation programs, and continuing education. Founded in 1971, the college has campuses in Crossville, Harriman, Huntsville, Jamestown, Knoxville, LaFollette, Lenoir City, Oak Ridge, and Wartburg.
