Clydia Ophelia Hendren, age 88, of Oak Ridge, died unexpectedly Friday, July 5, at Methodist Medical Center.
She was born Oct. 5, 1924, in Campbell County, one of eight children born to Aaron T. and Florence Bailey Nelson.
Mrs. Hendren retired from the U.S. Department of Energy.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Julius Hendren, on Jan. 15, 2008, who was also a retiree of the Department of Energy. She and her husband were both longtime members of First Baptist Church of Oak Ridge. She had been active on many church committees and church activities.
Mrs. Hendren participated in many area groups for professional women. She was an avid bridge player in many circles. She also enjoyed monthly lunches with graduates of Coal Creek High School.
She is survived by brother, Aaron J. Nelson of Jacksboro; sister, Bonnie N. Farmer of Knoxville; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family, including local niece, A. Rebecca Wood of Knoxville.
The family received friends Wednesday, July 10, from 12 to 2 p.m. at Weatherford Mortuary. The funeral began at 2 p.m. with Rev. Tim Borchert officiating and Dr. Larry Dipboye assisting. The interment followed at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.
The family asks that any memorials be made to the American Heart Association, American Diabetic Association, or Alzheimer’s TN.
