The Roane County Jail is in danger of being decertified due to overcrowding issues.
During an inspection in May, state jail inspectors warned the Roane County Sheriff’s Office that they could face decertification if the overcrowding problem was not addressed, and during a follow-up visit last week, inspectors found the same problems still lingering.
The jail is certified to hold 172 inmates but is routinely above that threshold. The Tennessee Correctional Institute board will meet on Sept. 4, at which time they could vote to decertify the facility.
In the long run, the answer may be building more pods to accommodate the increasing population. But in the short term, officials will be working with state jail consultants to try and find a solution to the problem before that meeting.
