Peggy Murphy, a longtime deputy who was a pioneer in law enforcement, died Saturday after a long battle with cancer, the Anderson County Sheriff’s Department said Wednesday. She was 68.
“Deputy Peggy Murphy was a veteran law enforcement officer,” Anderson County Sheriff Paul White said in a statement. “One of the female pioneers in law enforcement, she began her career with the Clinton Police Department in 1966. Peggy served with the Anderson County Sheriff’s Department from 1976 until 1986. She returned to the Sheriff’s Department in 2006 and served until her death.
“Peggy was well- known throughout the community as a true professional and will be sadly missed.”
The statement said Murphy’s family will hold a memorial service on Monday, June 10, at noon at Lakeview Baptist Church, 3330 West Wolf Valley Road in Claxton.
“Please keep the family and friends in your thoughts and prayers,” White said.
WYSH Radio in Clinton reported that Murphy was the first female officer ever hired by the Clinton Police Department.
