School board considers ‘high performing’ district designation, camera system

The Oak Ridge Board of Education tonight will consider designating the school system as a “high performing school district,” purchasing a security camera system, and renewing the transportation contract.

Under a bill that recently passed the Tennessee General Assembly, the high-performing designation would allow the school system to use a teacher evaluation system that varies from the system established by the Tennessee Department of Education and add educational days to the district’s school calendar. The district could also apply to the state education commissioner for a waiver of any state board rule, regulation, or statute that “inhibits or hinders the district’s ability to meet its goals or comply with its mission statements.”

Based on criteria that include graduation rate and average ACT scores, Oak Ridge Schools is eligible to declare itself as a “high performing school district,” and the designation would take effect July 1, according to the school board’s agenda.

The $55,180 security camera system would be purchased from Systems Integration LLC of Lebanon, and it would be an upgrade from the current system, switching the district’s closed-circuit television system from analog to digital.

Tonight’s meeting starts at 5:30 p.m. in the School Administration Building Board Room.
