Continuous Threads Sewing Studio in Oak Ridge will offer summer sewing camps beginning June 10 and ending the week of July 29.

Sewing camps will meet daily from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Each week-long camp is designed for boys and girls ages nine and up who want to learn how to sew using hand sewing and machine techniques. During the course of a given camp week, students will make new friends and learn skills involving math, design, and even history, a press release said.

There are two beginner camps scheduled, for boys and girls who have never sewn before. The beginner camps will start with basic hand sewing skills and then move on to sewing room and machine safety, followed by a thorough grounding in sewing machine skills.

“Students will end up with several completed projects and a deep sense of pride and accomplishment,” the press release said.

Subsequent camps will build on skills learned in beginner camps and will involve more complex sewing projects. This year’s camps draw inspiration from popular movie themes such as “The Avengers,” “Oz,” “The Hobbit,” and “Monsters University.” In keeping with this theme, there is a Super Hero camp where students learn to sew capes, masks, and other things “super heroes” need.

In another camp, the kids will be sewing their own functional canvas tents along with other useful camping gear. In the Oz-themed camp, students will sew Dorothy, Glinda, and Wicked Witch dresses for their 18-inch dolls.

“This is just a taste of the Blockbuster Summer Sewing camps planned at Continuous Threads Sewing Studio,” the release said.

Continuous Threads Sewing Studio’s sewing instructors are Manderley Swain and Jeannie O’Brien. They each have more than seven years experience teaching sewing to children and adults and more than 20 years combined professional sewing experience. This will be their seventh year teaching kids’ sewing camps.

Camps will be held all summer, and there are two opportunities to take the beginner class: June 10-14 and June 24-28. Registration is under way now.

For more information and a complete schedule, contact O’Brien at (865) 621-2945 or Swain at (865) 964-2178 or by email at [email protected] and on Facebook.

Continuous Threads Sewing Studio is in Historic Jackson Square.
