The Oak Ridge Breakfast Rotary Club and Altrusa recently awarded roughly $19,000 in 14 literacy grants to 10 organizations.

The grants are awarded based on a competition that is judged by a committee of Rotarians and Altrusans, a press release said. Winners are celebrated during March of each year when Rotary International observes Literacy Month.

The total presented in the 2013 literacy grant awards was $18,987.

The press release said the Oak Ridge Breakfast Rotary Club and the Altrusa Club of Oak Ridge have “joined forces in support of literacy within our community” for more than 20 years.

“Each year, the clubs host a Literacy Luncheon to raise funds in support of submitted grants from various literacy-related organizations in the area,” the press release said.

The total request for funds this year was more than $56,000, and some worthy causes were not able to be funded, the press release said, demonstrating the “desperate need for additional funds.”

Here is a list of the literacy grant awards:

  • Dutch Valley Elementary School—$2,084.97 to introduce improved reading skills through Kindle e-readers,
  • Oak Ridge Family Resource Center—$4,150.00 for their Readers and Leaders Program,
  • Clinton City Schools—$407.20 for E Books from Scholastic,
  • ADFAC—$2,000.00 for a school supply program,
  • Norris Middle School—$671.07 for their Literacy through Science Program,
  • Oak Ridge Preschool—two grants totaling $3,866.00 for new programs to foster pre-reading skills,
  • Girls Inc.—$1,000.00 to enhance book club for fostering reading skills,
  • Roane Imagination Library—$1,500.00 to help support the Imagination Library program in Roane County,
  • TORCH Literacy Council—$3,500.00 in support of adult literacy programs, and
  • Clinton Middle Schools—four different grants for a total of $2,458.20, supporting interests in reading literature, history, and government in middle school age children.
