Historian Dan Pierce will discuss his upcoming book “Corn from a Jar: Moonshining in the Great Smoky Mountains” on Wednesday at Roane State Community College’s Oak Ridge campus.

Pierce’s lecture will be held from 3:30-5 p.m. today (April 24) in the City Room. Presented by Roane State’s Arts and Lectures Committee, the event is free and open to the public.

Pierce is a professor of history at UNC Asheville and the author of a comprehensive history of NASCAR titled “Real NASCAR: White Lightning, Red Clay, and Big Bill France.” He is also the author of “The Great Smokies: From Natural Habitat to National Park” and has had his work published in The New York Times, Southern Cultures, Smokies Life magazine and numerous encyclopedias.

He has appeared on NPR’s “Talk of the Nation,” The History Channel, “North Carolina People with William Friday,” “North Carolina Bookwatch,” and the South Carolina ETV Emmy-winning program “Take on the South.”

“Corn from a Jar: Moonshining in the Great Smoky Mountains” is set to be published by the Great Smoky Mountains Association in early 2014.
