Norman A. Teasley, Sr.

Norman A. Teasley, Sr.

Norman A. Teasley Sr., 95, a longtime resident of Oak Ridge, passed away on March 18.

He was born Sept. 22, 1917, to parents George Glenn and Bessie Teasley in Anderson, S.C., where he later met and married Lucille Fountain on Aug. 15, 1937.

After the death of his wife Lucille in 1995, Norman and Jane Gurney were married in 1997.

Following his service with the naval shipyards in Norfolk, Va., Norman, Lucille and their two sons, Norman Jr. and Glenn, moved to Oak Ridge in 1945. Until his retirement in 1976, Norman worked for Union Carbide at K-25, and during this time, he developed many specialized spectrometer parts used in analyses to support the war efforts at that time. He was also involved with the construction of the zonal centrifuges used for the separation and enrichment of uranium.

While on special assignment to Eli Lilly in Indianapolis, Ind., Norman worked on the separation of pure flu vaccine, which was one of the specialized uses of the centrifuges and which advanced Eli Lilly’s efforts to manufacture flu vaccines. Norman was personally recognized for his contributions by the presidents of both Union Carbide and Eli Lilly, for which he was very proud.

Norman was preceded in death by his parents, wife Lucille, brothers Walton and Lawrence and, in June 2011, his wife Jane.

Norman is survived by his two sons and their wives, Norman A. Teasley Jr. (Judy) and Glenn E. Teasley (Anne) of Knoxville; seven grandchildren, N. Allan Teasley III (Stacey), Scott A. Teasley (Molly), V. Ashley Dalton (Wallace), Geoffrey P. Eisenstadt (Susan), Matthew E. Eisenstadt (Rachael), James T. Eisenstadt, and Jonathan E. Eisenstadt; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews in the Southeast. He is also survived by three sisters, Sara Patterson, Bessie West, and Juanita Byrum.

Norman was an active member of Kern Memorial United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge, and, in lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the church at 451 Tennessee Avenue, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday, March 21, at Kern Memorial Methodist Church. The funeral will follow at 2 p.m. The graveside service will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.
