Mary L. ‘Granny’ Smith

Mary L. “Granny” Smith, age 83, a resident of Lenoir City and formerly of Powell, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, March 9, at the NHC, Ft. Sanders in Knoxville.

Mary was born Sept. 15, 1929, in Sumner County, Tenn. She has lived in Knoxville since 1941.

Mrs. Smith was a homemaker, a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a faithful Christian and a member of the New Providence Baptist Church. Her hobbies included taking care of family, sewing, cooking, and spoiling her son-in-law, Tom, with fried apple pies.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Philip Wade Smith; by her parents, Albert T. Lacy and Anna Mae Bentley Lacy; by a brother, Thomas William Lacy; and by a sister, Sarah Alice Thomas.

Mrs. Smith is survived by a daughter, Brenda Sheets and husband Tom of Columbia, S.C.; by sons, Wayne Smith and wife Carla of Knoxville, and Pastor Gary Smith and wife Cindy of Lenoir City; by grandchildren, Mickey Summerall, Kyria England, Andrea Adams, Laura Beth Christian, Phillip Smith, and Eric Smith; and by great-grandchildren, Ember England, Griffen England, Rebekah Summerall, Sarah Summerall, Regan Adams, Ayden Adams, Camden Christian, Emme Sue Christian, Kaylee Smith, Elle Smith, Gabby Smith, and Braedon Lockhart.

She is also survived by a brother, Albert E. Lacy and wife Ann of Tazewell; by a sister-in-law, Jewel Lacy of Conyers, Ga.; and by several nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 12, between 6 and 8 p.m. at Ridgeview Baptist Church, 6125 Lacy Road, Knoxville, TN 37912. The funeral will follow at 8 p.m. in the church with Pastor Mark Caldwell officiating.

Burial and graveside services will be held Wednesday, March 13, at 10 a.m. at the Glenwood Cemetery in Powell with Maston Jackson officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorial contributions be made to Alzheimer’s Tennessee, Inc., PO Box 10088, Knoxville, TN 37939.
