Margaret “Peggy” Power Larkin

Margaret (Peggy) Power Larkin, age 89, died peacefully at the Summit Assisted Living in Lynchburg, Va., on Thursday, March 7.

She was the wife of the late William Joseph Larkin.

Born Jan. 8, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Richard and Hannah Cullen Power of Tramore, County Waterford, Ireland. She was educated by the Sisters of Charity at the Star of the Sea Convent in Tramore.

In 1946, Mrs. Larkin emigrated from Ireland to New York City, where she met William Joseph Larkin, whom she married on Jan. 29, 1949. They moved to Oak Ridge, where Mr. Larkin was appointed assistant director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Engineering Practice School at Union Carbide. She became a U.S. citizen in 1952.

Mrs. Larkin was a resident of Oak Ridge from 1949 until 2006, except for 1969-1973, when she and her husband moved to Las Vegas, Nev., where Mr. Larkin was transferred with the Atomic Energy Commission. In 2006, she moved to Lynchburg, Va., to be near her son and his family.

While in Oak Ridge, Mrs. Larkin was a member of St Mary’s Catholic Church and active in St. Therese’s Guild. After moving to Lynchburg, she became a member of St Thomas More Catholic Church. She was an avid bridge player, an activity she enjoyed until the last few years.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by three sisters, May Tobin, Joan Cullinan, and Kathleen Merrigan; and three brothers, Michael, Richard, and John Power, all of Ireland.

She is survived by her son, Dr. Lawrence Douglas Larkin and his wife Jane McCandliss Larkin; two granddaughters, Dr. Lisa Marie Larkin and her husband Mark Fara, and Maureen Larkin Wilson and her husband Dean Wilson; and one great-grandson, Logan Steele Wilson, all of Lynchburg. She is also survived by two brothers, Patrick Power and his wife Renee, and Maurice Power and his wife Margaret, all of Tramore, County Waterford, Ireland, and many Irish nieces and nephews.

The family will receive visitors at St. Mary’s Catholic Church Chapel on Monday, March 11, from 10-11 a.m. A funeral mass will begin at 11 am. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. A reception will take place after the interment in Columbus Hall at St. Mary’s.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to St. Mary’s School, 327A Vermont Avenue, Oak Ridge, TN, 37830, or to a charity of your choice. An online guest book may be signed at weatherfordmortuary.com.
