City egg hunt March 23, volunteers needed

The Oak Ridge Recreation and Parks Department will host the 2013 Egg Hunt later this month.

Hundreds of children are expected to participate in this annual spring event, a city press release said. It starts at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 23, at A.K. Bissell Park.

The press release said more than 15,000 candy and prize filled eggs will be hidden in the park, with a first-, second- and third-place prize egg in each age group. The egg hunt will be held “rain or shine,” so participants should dress for the weather. If severe weather prevents volunteers from hiding the eggs outdoors, they will be given away in the gym, and a drawing will be held for the prizes.

Participants should assemble in the Oak Ridge Civic Center gymnasium prior to 11 a.m. The children will be divided into separate age groups from four years old through fourth grade, and they will be escorted to their respective hunt areas.

The press release said the Recreation and Parks Department staff will make a reasonable effort to provide appropriate accommodations for children with special needs. Parents of children who require a more accessible hunt area are encouraged to call ahead.

Volunteers needed

Adult volunteers, age 16 and up, are still needed to hide eggs, supervise the hunt areas, and assist participants, the release said. All volunteers should be prepared to work 9 a.m. to noon on the day of the event and should dress according to the weather. The first 50 volunteers to sign up will receive an event T-shirt. A pizza lunch will be served to all volunteers immediately following the event.

For more information, call the Civic Center front desk at (865) 425-3450 or visit the Oak Ridge Recreation and Parks website at www.orrecparks.org.

Is this just a random egg hunt or an Easter egg hunt?

The egg hunt is close to Easter, but I don’t think the city can call it an Easter egg hunt. If I recall correctly, they began calling it an egg hunt within the last half-dozen years. I don’t recall the precise reason.

The reason John, is compliance to a politically correct government that doesn’t believe that people should have the right to the pursuit of happiness anymore. I don’t necessarily agree with Easter egg hunts on a personal level ,but like 1 famous Athiest said “I would defend your right to be wrong ,to the death”

The Oak Ridge Chamber sponsored the annual Christmas Parade and I am curious as to why this event is not referred to as an Easter Egg Hunt. In a city that is currently working towards being named a National “Manhattan Project” Park, proud of its heritage, why they would find it so hard to continue the tradition of an annual Easter Egg Hunt. I believe even the left-wing liberal White House occupants hold an Easter Egg Roll on the White House lawn. I think political correctness is getting out o hand.
