Jewell Chappell Hicks, age 81, of Oak Ridge, went to be with the Lord on Feb. 13.

She was born Sept. 19, 1931, in Lake Toxaway, N.C., and moved to Oak Ridge in 1948.

She worked for McCrory’s 5&10 and Southern Bell as a telephone operator before marrying Gene Hicks on April 6, 1950.

For the next 63 years they lived in Oak Ridge, where she raised a family, enjoyed gardening, and loved to cook and sew. Jewell loved music, dancing, clogging, and was an active member of the Rambling Rebels Square Dance Club.

Jewell became a member of Central Baptist Church on April 4, 1954. She appreciated so much the love and care she received from her church family at Central Baptist Church and especially the Bethany Sunday School Class. To all those who knew her she was a real “jewel.”

Jewell is predeceased by her parents, Clyde Hill Chappell and Carcie Etta Powell, and nine brothers and sisters.

She is survived by her husband, Gene Hicks; daughter, Angie (Joe) Fincher of Oak Ridge; son, Mike (Janet) Hicks of Jefferson City; grandchildren, Gina (Adam) Hensley of Chattanooga, Lisa (Chris) McCune of Lenoir City, Joshua (Melanie) Hicks of Jefferson City, and Matthew (Nicki) Hicks of Dandridge; and great-grandchildren, Lucas and Mila Hensley of Chattanooga, Graham and Grady Hicks of Jefferson City, and Pip, Mia, and Topher Hicks of Dandridge.

Jewell spent many hours enjoying books from her church library. Rather than flowers, friends are encouraged to contribute to the Library Fund at Central Baptist Church or a favorite charity.

The family gathered Friday, Feb. 15, for a receiving of friends at Central Baptist Church, Funeral services followed and burial was at Woodhaven Memorial Gardens on Saturday, Feb. 16.
