The Women’s Interfaith Dialogue of Oak Ridge will discuss “Discriminatory and Prejudicial Thinking” during a Monday meeting at Grace Covenant Church.

The presenter will be Michele DeRieux. DeRieux has almost 15 years as a certified trainer for the National Coalition Building Institute, an international organization for mediating conflict and celebrating diversity, a press release said.

She has taught English classes at area colleges for more than 30 years and presented community seminars on diverse subjects from right-brain creativity to the essence of Mark Twain.

Here is more information from the press release:

Interacting with group members, Ms. DeRieux will explore how prejudice develops and the extent to which conscious and unconscious prejudicial thinking influences our interactions with others. She will demonstrate how to recognize discriminatory thinking in oneself and others, as well as how to helpfully deal with discriminatory remarks in personal, academic, and business situations. Using familiar examples, she will demonstrate how working toward more non-conformational communication can set the stage for more effective communication and the sharing of ideas.

Members of WID represent the Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, Hindu, Muslim, Baha’i, Buddhist, and Unitarian Universalist faith traditions. Their programs and projects aim to bring together women of diverse faith, color, and culture to explore, understand, and learn from one another. Their purpose is to advance justice, compassion, friendship, and human rights, with a focus on women and children. However a most enjoyable part of association with each other is simply sharing each other’s spiritual journeys as friends.

The community is invited to the Monday meeting, which starts at 2 p.m. For more information, contact Carolyn Dipboye at (865) 483-6752 or Fran Silver at (865) 483-4284.

Grace Covenant Church is at 320 Robertsville Road in Oak Ridge in the Trinity Center building.
