Children’s Museum offers art and animal adventure classes

Jungle and prehistoric adventures, among others, will entertain and educate children during winter classes at the Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge this winter.

Preschool classes are for children ages 3-4. They will be:

  • Littlest Artist, 10-11:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12. Little ones will be introduced to the basic art principles of line, color and shape and will create a collage with mixed media. Fee is $15 for members and $20 for non-members. The fees include admission to museum after class for student.
  • Prehistoric Adventures, 11 a.m.-noon, Jan. 16 and 23. Children will travel back to prehistoric times when dinosaurs roamed the earth as they make dinosaurs with modeling clay, paint and found objects. Fee is $30 for members and $35 for non-members.

Classes for older children will be:

  • Jungle Adventure, 1-3 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 12, for ages 5-6. Children will explore the rain forest and then swing into action to investigate shape and color with techniques such as collage and painting. Fee is $20 for members and $25 for non-members.
  • Dino Art, 11 a.m.-noon, Saturdays Jan. 19, 26, and Feb. 2, for ages 5-6. Children will travel back to prehistoric times when dinosaurs roamed the earth and create dinosaurs with modeling clay, paint and found objects. Fee is $30 for members and $35 for non-members. Register by Jan. 14.
  • Animal Art, 1-3 p.m. Saturdays, Jan. 19, 26, and Feb. 2, for ages 7-9. Children will learn about animals from different continents and their habitats and create a red panda mask, paint an okapi and fashion a nautilus. Fee is $30 for members, $35 for non-members. Register by Jan. 14.

Professional clay artist Sherrie Carris will teach a Home School Pottery class for ages 7 and up from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. on Jan. 16, 23 and 30. This class provides an opportunity to practice hand-building and wheel-throwing while learning about the history of pottery. Young potters will gain a solid foundation of throwing techniques while creating bowls, pots, vases and more. Sculpture techniques, glazing and texturing will also be covered. Personal expression is encouraged. Fee is $50 for members and $55 for non-members, with an $8 glazing and firing fee.

Carris, who has been working with clay for more than 30 years, has a BFA from the University of Texas, an MFA from the University of Iowa and teaching certification from the University of Tennessee.
