An Athens man is accused of “head butting” an Oak Ridge woman on Friday night, punching and kicking her, and choking her “to the point of unconsciousness,” authorities said.
Gerald D. Wells, 26, has been charged with aggravated assault (domestic), and he remained jailed Tuesday morning.
The alleged assault occurred on Wilberforce Avenue at about 11:30 p.m. Friday, according to an affidavit filed in Anderson County General Sessions Court by Oak Ridge Police Officer Benjamin Haines.
Wells and the victim had been in a relationship for about four months, and they argued Friday after the victim accused Wells of stealing her Xanax, Haines said.
The victim said Wells head-butted her in the face, punched her in the abdomen, kicked her repeatedly while she was on the ground, and choked her, Haines reported. The woman was treated in the emergency room for a broken nose, concussion, possible broken right eye socket, swollen neck, fractured right index finger, and multiple bruises, Haines said.
“The defendant admitted to the victim’s father, before the report and treatment, that he had caused the victim’s injuries,” Haines said.
Wells was arrested at the emergency room on a self-admitted mental health evaluation, the affidavit said. His bond has been set at $25,000.
