Maurice Alton Woods

Maurice Alton Woods, age 74, a resident of Oliver Springs, went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, Dec. 9, at the University of Tennessee Medical Center.

Mr. Woods was born Dec., 30, 1937, in Coalfield, Tenn.

Following his Coalfield High School graduation in 1955, he entered into the United States Air Force and served his country until 1959. After his military service, he moved back to Harriman, where he lived for a short time. He has lived in Oliver Springs for more than 50 years.

Mr. Woods retired from the Y-12 federal plant as a chemical operator in 1997.

He was a faithful Christian and a member of Orchard View Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Oliver Springs Historical Society. He enjoyed collecting antiques, restoring antique gas pumps, and raising Welsh Corgi Pembroke dogs.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elijah Woods and Mamie Russell Woods; by brothers, Ross Haynes Fagan and Tommy Woods; and by sisters, Laverne Duncan and Betty Borum.

Mr. Woods is survived by his wife of 54 years, Martha Borum Woods; by sons, Jeffrey Woods and wife Janice of Oliver Springs, and Donald Woods and wife Valarie of Oliver Springs; by a daughter, Lori Reed and husband Matt of Oliver Springs; by grandchildren, Eli Woods, Ali Woods, Jessica Woods, Jody Woods, Chad Reed, and Leah Hamm and husband Jansen; and by great-grandchildren, Jackson Hamm, and Emma Grace Hamm.

He is also survived by a brother, Paul Woods of Burlington, Ky.; and sisters, Corene Holbert of Powell, Jo Griffith and husband David of Elizabethtown, Ky., and Joy Brown and husband, Ronnie of Kingston.

The family received friends Tuesday, Dec. 11, between 1 and 2 p.m. at the Orchard View Baptist Church. The funeral followed at 2 p.m. at the church with Pastor Matt Reed officiating. Burial and graveside services followed at the Borum-Foster cemetery in Oliver Springs.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the charity of your choice.
