Lora Lavonne Phipps, age 80, of Oak Ridge, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 4, at Methodist Medical Center.
She was born April 30, 1932, in Newton, Miss., the daughter of Jasie and Glover Hill.
She was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, where she was active in the Guiding Light Circle and the Senior Choir. She was also active in the NADA (Nine Adults Dedicating Assistance) Club, where she served as treasurer and volunteered as a poll worker at the City Hall District.
Mrs. Phipps enjoyed reading, fishing, sewing, and water aerobics. She was well-known in the Scarboro Community for her pound cakes. She retired as a lab technician from Martin Marietta Energy Systems, X-10.
In addition to her parents and siblings (Eddie, Richard and Jimmie Sue), she was preceded in death by her husband, former Oak Ridge City Councilman George W. Phipps.
She is survived by her children Ray (Mae) Hill of Phoenix, Ariz., Shelia (Walton) of Murfreesboro, and George (Doreen) of Knoxville; sisters-in-law Elizabeth Phipps and Mary Hill of Oak Ridge and Rosa Hill of Tacoma, Wash.; grandchildren Aaron, Thomas, Monica, Derek, Jason, Jamal, Joseph, and Victor; nephew Zachary Hill of Tacoma, Wash.; nieces Rhonda Moore of Nashville, and Madilyn Flemons and Sylvia McGhee of Stockton, Calif.; 10 great- grandchildren; and a host of special relatives and family friends.
The family will receive friends, Saturday, Dec. 8, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Weatherford Mortuary. The funeral will begin at 11 a.m. with Elder Thomas Dews officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.
