U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda L. Solis will tour the Oak Ridge campus of Roane State Community College on Wednesday to highlight federal investments in health care job training.

The tour comes about two weeks after the U.S. Department of Labor announced that a consortium led by Roane State had received a $12.5 million grant to offer more training for health care careers and help students finish their degrees. The Sept. 19 announcement included a total of 54 grants helping nearly 300 schools across the country.

The Wednesday tour starts at 11 a.m., and it will be followed by remarks by Solis and a press conference.

A Tuesday press release said the department’s funding for the Roane State consortium will be used for the RX Tennessee training program, which will help students prepare for health care careers through specific occupational training designed to meet the needs of Tennessee employers.

In general, the Labor Department grants will “foster partnerships between community colleges and local employers to promote skills development and employment opportunities in fields such as advanced manufacturing, transportation, and health care, as well as science, technology, engineering, and math occupations,” the release said.

RX Tennessee is part of the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training initiative, which promotes skills development and employment opportunities in various fields. Additional information about the program, including a full list of grantees, is available at http://www.doleta.gov/taaccct.
