Girls Inc. has received a $46,000 state clean energy grant to replace the roof at the former National Guard Armory on Oak Ridge Turnpike.
Tennessee officials have announced a $46,164 clean energy grant to Girls Inc. of Oak Ridge to replace the roof at the former National Guard Armory.
The roof renovations will prepare Girls Inc. to complete other projects at the building on Oak Ridge Turnpike, such as installing a solar panel array and high-efficiency heating and cooling systems, lighting, and energy-efficient windows, the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation said in a press release.
Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam and TDEC Commissioner Bob Martineau announced the grant on Thursday, part of a $2.3 million package for 17 energy efficiency projects across the state. The projects are designed to cut air emissions, improve energy efficiency, and save money, TDEC said.
It’s the first time the Clean Tennessee Energy Grants have been awarded.
“I am thrilled that TDEC saw the importance of revitalizing the currently unusable National Guard Armory building in Oak Ridge,” said Tennessee Rep. John Ragan, an Oak Ridge Republican. “The new solar roof not only fits well with Anderson County’s long history of diverse power production, but it will also help Girls Inc. have a suitable facility for their organization.”
Funding for the projects comes from an April 2011 Clean Air Act settlement with the Tennessee Valley Authority. Under what is known as a consent decree, Tennessee will receive $26.4 million during a five-year period to fund clean air programs in the state, or about $5.25 million per year.
In addition to the $2.3 million in Clean Energy Grants announced last week, $3 million was announced earlier this year for energy efficiency projects in state government, TDEC said.
“Increasing energy efficiency in our communities will help us become better stewards of both the environment and taxpayer dollars,” Haslam said.
The Clean Tennessee Energy grants can be awarded to alternative energy, energy conservation, and air quality improvements.
