Harold Dwight “Sonny” Fairchild, age 82, a resident of Oliver Springs, passed away Saturday, June 9, at Tennova Hospice in Knoxville.

Sonny was born on Feb. 11, 1930, in Petros. He and his family moved to Oliver Springs during his early childhood.

He graduated from Oliver Springs High School in 1948. Following his high school graduation, he entered into the U.S. Army and served his country during the Korean War. While serving, he received several medals, citations, ribbons, and awards.

Following his military discharge, he became a truck driver and continued his occupation for 55 years. While driving, he received multiple safety and mileage awards. His hobbies included fishing and hunting with family and friends.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Oliver Springs and the Oliver Springs Historical Society.

Mr. Fairchild was preceded in death by his parents, Shirley and Bonnie Gosnell Fairchild; by a sister, Earline McIver; and by a granddaughter, Chelsea Fairchild.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Louise Strickland Fairchild; by a daughter, Nancy Byrge and husband, Lonnie of Oliver Springs; by sons, Harold Fairchild and wife, Rhonda of Menomonie, Wis., Jason Fairchild and wife, Tammy of Clinton, Scott Fairchild and wife, Debi of Clinton, and Ronnie Fairchild and wife, Tammy of Oliver Springs; by grandchildren, Joe Byrge and wife Jennifer of Seymour, Christopher Fairchild and wife, Amanda of Heiskel, Carissa Fairchild of Clinton, Joshua and Hannah Fairchild of Karns; and by great-grandchildren; Cody and Brittney Byrge, and Jaelyn and Jayce Fairchild.

He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, extended family members, and special friends, including Doug and Carol Qualls.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 12, at Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs. The funeral will follow at 8 p.m., in the funeral home chapel with Dr. Charles Parker officiating.

Burial and graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 13, at the Oliver Springs Cemetery.
