Even if the Oak Ridge graduation ceremony gets rained out tonight, Graduation Celebration will go on, an organizer said Thursday afternoon.

“We party tonight at 10 o’clock regardless,” said Matt Reedy, Oak Ridge recreation program supervisor.

Now in its 16th year, the annual event is open to graduating Oak Ridge High School seniors, and it starts at 10 p.m. tonight at the Oak Ridge Civic Center and ends at 6 a.m. Friday.

Reedy said this year’s Graduation Celebration will feature all-you-can-eat food, scuba diving in the Civic Center’s pool, casino, bingo, games, and prizes, including $3,000 cash. There are also two iPads to be given away and 11 scholarships (nine $500 awards and two $1,000 scholarships).

It’s a free drug- and alcohol-free party for the students.

Reedy said about 80 to 85 percent of graduating seniors usually attend, or about 280 students.

Graduation Celebration is sponsored by the Oak Ridge Youth Advisory Board and Oak Ridge Graduation Celebration Community Foundation.

Donors usually give between $35,000 and $50,000 per year for the event.
