An Anderson County planning committee will meet next week to discuss the six bids received on a $10 million jail expansion project, according to WYSH Radio in Clinton.
Bids opened in June ranged from $9.66 million to $10.4 million, WYSH said. The companies that submitted bids included Rouse Construction, Messer Construction, Merit General Contractors, Denark Construction, Bell and Associates, and Johnson and Galyon Construction.
The expansion of the Anderson County Detention Facility is designed to reduce chronic jail overcrowding. The project also includes a 128-bed minimum security dormitory scheduled to open later this year and a program focusing on finding alternatives to incarceration for designated low-risk, nonviolent offenders.
Funding for the jail expansion comes from a 16.2-cent property tax increase last year.
The companies that bid on the jail expansion project said it could take from 420 to 550 days to complete construction, WYSH said.
The bids will be discussed during a 6 p.m. July 9 Jail Planning Committee meeting in Room 118A of the Anderson County Courthouse in Clinton.
The committee’s recommendation will be then be considered by the full Anderson County Commission.
