Seema Singh-Perez, elected to Knoxville City Council last November, will be the guest speaker at the Monday, February 26, meeting of the Anderson County Democratic Women’s Club. The club will host a dinner of homemade soups at 6 p.m. in the Club Room of the Clinton Community Center, which is at 101 South Hicks Street in Clinton.
Singh-Perez, along with members of the Knoxville 2017 City Council Movement, will discuss the movement’s grass roots effort to support and elect candidates, aiming to bring community voices into political decision-making, a press release said.
“The movement had little money but took advantage of many volunteer hours in the campaign,” the press release said.
Among the movement’s goals was electing candidates who maintain community accountability and represent the needs of all residents, including racially diverse and economically challenged communities that have been traditionally underserved, the release said.
Singh-Perez, a first-time candidate, was elected to Knoxville City Council for the Third District. She grew up in the Third District, attending Bearden High School and the University of Tennessee, and served as an advocate for the community for more than 20 years in the field of medical social work to increase access to healthcare for women, people with HIV/AIDS, and the homeless population, the press release said.
No reservations are necessary. Soups, bread ,and desserts will be served, and the cost is $5 per person. For more information, send an email to Ann Mostoller at [email protected] or call Mary Matheny at (865) 483-8937.
