Tiger Moth
The University of Tennessee Arboretum Society has its fourth annual MOTHer’s Night Out at 7:30 p.m. today.
The event will allow visitors to learn about moths and other nocturnal insects. It will be led by naturalist Kris Light.
“Bring your camera, your friends, and your kids as well as a magnifying glass, a flashlight and a desire to learn about these fascinating critters,” a press release said. [Read more...]
Oak Ridge Community Orchestra
The Oak Ridge Community Orchestra has a free concert Saturday featuring the music of three British composers from the 19th and 20th centuries, and one 21st century Oak Ridge composer—Nancy England.
England founded the ORCO 20 years ago, and she is still with the orchestra today, playing cello. The English composers featured at Saturday’s concert are Ralph Vaughan Williams, Gustav Holst, and Edward Elgar, a press release said.
The concert starts at 2 p.m. in the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church of Oak Ridge, at the corner of the Oak Ridge Turnpike and Lafayette Drive. “Admission is free, but modest donations at the door to support the orchestra’s routine operating expenses will be appreciated,” the release said. Plans call for converting the Alexander Inn, formerly known as The Guest House, into an assisted living center.
It’s been in the works for months, and officials announced on Tuesday that a local company has purchased the historic but rundown Alexander Inn.
Family Pride Corp. plans to convert the vacant two-story hotel into an assisted living center.
The sale was announced by the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance, a key player in the project. A press release said the agreement announced Tuesday includes a preservation easement with ETPA that will ensure the building is protected forever. [Read more...]
Ruth Queen Smith
Ruth Queen Smith will be the featured speaker at a afternoon meeting today of the Women’s Interfaith Dialogue of Oak Ridge.
Her talk, titled “Ruth, Miriam and the Woman at the Well,” will focus on these prominent women, and how the cultural differences of all three are reflected in Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. Smith is a pastoral associate at John XXIII University Parish. [Read more...]
Lee Curtis
A Tennessee tourism official will be the featured speaker at a Thursday night meeting of the Oak Ridge Heritage and Preservation Association.
Lee Curtis is program development director of the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development, where she has worked since 1990, a press release said.
It said Curtis’ responsibilities include overseeing and developing the Tennessee Civil War Trails program and serving as the department’s heritage tourism contact. On Thursday, she will discuss the Civil War Trail Marker program in Oak Ridge, the press release said. [Read more...]

Sound Company Children’s Choir of Oak Ridge will celebrate their 10th anniversary by performing their greatest hits from the past decade this weekend.
There will be three performances, one at 9:30 a.m. Friday, a second at 7 p.m., and a third at 3 p.m. Saturday. All shows will be performed at the Historic Grove Theater at High Places Church.

UCOR, the federal cleanup contractor in Oak Ridge, recently donated a second installment pledge of $20,000 to the Emory Valley Center, a press release said.
In 2010, UCOR pledged to Emory Valley Center fundraising co-chairs Gene Caldwell and Dottie Thompson that it would donate $100,000 during the next five years to help build a new center.
“We believe in the importance of the work done to help so many people at Emory Valley Center,” UCOR President Leo Sain said in the press release. [Read more...]

The Oak Ridge Public Schools Education Foundation presented a check for $81,000 to the Oak Ridge Schools at the Foundation’s award ceremony Friday evening. The funds will be used to provide a variety of educational materials in each of the city’s seven public schools.
Oak Ridge National Laboratory Director and Foundation Chair Thom Mason told an audience of more than 150 attending the event that the gift was part of the Foundation’s “Making a Critical Difference” campaign that provides teachers small grants for teaching tools not available in the city’s education budget. Mason said that, since the program began in 2004, the Foundation has awarded a total of more than $408,000 to dozens of teachers in every grade. [Read more...]
Arts Council of Oak Ridge
The Arts Council of Oak Ridge and its member organizations are having a premier Tribute to the Arts on Thursday.
It’s scheduled from 6-9 p.m. at the DoubleTree Hotel in Oak Ridge.
“This exciting cultural event will recognize artists and arts supporters from our area for the outstanding contributions they have made through their hearts and talents,” a press release said. “The Arts Council member organizations have long contributed to the culture and vitality of our region, and ACOR believes there is a need to acknowledge these groups and individuals for their service and talents.” [Read more...]
