Relay For Life kicks off with Survivors Lap on Friday

Relay For Life of Oak Ridge will kick off with a special Survivors Lap on Friday. It’s a moving experience honoring those who have defeated cancer, a press release said.

Survivors will join together to walk the opening lap, unified in victory and hope, while the rest of the event’s participants surround the track to cheer them on. This empowering celebration is just a small piece of the special experience of Relay For Life, the release said.

Relay For Life is a unique grassroots fundraising event in which individuals and teams of participants in more than 6,100 communities nationwide walk around a track overnight to celebrate the lives of those who have faced cancer, remember loved ones lost, and commit to fight back against the disease. The money raised through Relay For Life supports the efforts of the American Cancer Society to create a world with less cancer and more birthdays.

The Survivors Lap starts at 6 p.m. Friday at Oak Ridge High School. Relay for Life continues until midnight at Ben Martin Track at ORHS. [Read more…]

‘Why Art’ exhibit opens Friday at Children’s Museum

The Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge will host the opening of the exhibit “Why Art?” from 6-7 p.m. Friday, May 9, showcasing children’s art and highlighting the benefits of art education in a child’s academic life.

Children who are students of private art teacher Anjela McEahern will exhibit drawings and paintings in various media, including graphite pencil, colored pencil, pastel, watercolor and acrylic paint. Her 23 students, who attend preschool through eighth grade, will each have a work of art in the exhibit in Imagination Gallery at the museum at 461 W. Outer Drive.

The exhibit will also include a mural created by Phil Yeh, an artist representing Cartoonists Across America and the World, during the 2010 Street Painting Festival sponsored by the local Oak Ridge Rotary Clubs. Yeh and Leona Kitchings, who contributed to the mural, sketched Oak Ridge landmarks, and many local artists painted the landmarks.

Entertaining with a violin performance will be Michael Lin, a Farragut Middle School student and first violin in the Youth Chamber Orchestra in the Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra Association. [Read more…]

CASA, Child Advocacy Center collecting overnight bags for children

The Child Advocacy Center of Anderson County has joined with CASA of the Tennessee Heartland and a private therapist (Sheila Marczak) to address a special need.

More than 400 children in Anderson County are removed from their homes each year due to abuse and neglect.  We have found many of them do not have luggage (a carry-on or duffle bag) and must carry their belongings in a garbage bag. This is very humiliating to a child, and is happening at a time when these children are already so vulnerable. We are hoping to provide each child in shelter and foster care with a brand new carry-on (duffle bag, etc.), so that they will never have to move from one location to another with their personal items in trash bags. Twenty dragon boat teams ready to race May 31

Commit to a competitive sport and community support. 

That could be the motto of the inaugural Oak Ridge Dragon Boat Festival, a fundraiser for community nonprofit service organizations that will be launched by the three Rotary clubs of Oak Ridge.

Already at least 20 boat teams are being organized, with more expected to register soon at http://oakridge.racedragonboats.com/.

At least 15 companies and organizations have paid or pledged a total of more than $25,000.

The Oak Ridge Dragon Boat Festival will be held Saturday, May 31, at the Oak Ridge Marina and Pavilion in Melton Lake Park. [Read more…]

UT-Battelle joins community in honoring Myrick’s years of service through Habitat for Humanity project this summer

UT-Battelle is contributing $10,000 in matching donations to a Habitat for Humanity project dedicated to Tim and Teresa Myrick, who have been enduring supporters of the organization that provides shelter for deserving families.

Tim Myrick’s handiwork dots the Oak Ridge landscape. He was a major contributor to the modernization campaign at Oak Ridge National Laboratory that resulted in a sparkling new east campus. He helped lead the renovation of the town’s high school.

He’s been involved in all the Anderson County Habitat for Humanity projects in some way—58 in all.

He wants to add to that tally. There is some urgency in the matter.

“With the cancer thing I set priorities: fighting cancer, the Habitat project, Living Waters, building a new church, doing some fly fishing,” he said. [Read more…]

While the waiting room often gets crowed at the Free Medical Clinic of Oak Ridge (FMCOR), it was packed to capacity on a recent Sunday afternoon. People huddled together not to see a doctor, but to surprise the person whose efforts led to the clinic’s opening nearly four and a half years ago.

John and Mary Lou Auxier arrived at the clinic with John’s sister for a pre-arranged tour by Executive Director Teresa Brittain. Instead, John was surprised by more than 60 friends, colleagues, and clinic volunteers who gathered for a reception to honor him for turning his dream into a reality, a free clinic that provides basic medical care to the uninsured or to those who can’t afford to pay for medical care. Since opening, more than 3,500 residents of people who reside in Anderson, Roane, or Morgan counties have received care in more than 15,000 visits. [Read more…]

Red Cross to honor heroes at luncheon on Tuesday

The American Red Cross in Oak Ridge will recognize individuals who exemplify courage, kindness, and unselfish character at its 15th Annual Heroes Luncheon at noon Tuesday at the DoubleTree Hotel.

The Red Cross will honor local heroes from nominations submitted by the community. Those honored will include military, police, fire, first responders, and other local heroes, a press release said.

Nominees are people who have responded to a crisis to provide comfort or leadership and/or have provided an example to others in the community about dedication to the community in a time of need. Categories include Professional Rescuer/Responder (police, EMT, firefighter), Youth Good Samaritan (21 and younger), and Community Service.

Since 2000, the annual event has recognized hundreds of Anderson County heroes. [Read more…]

Eddie Money and Kix Brooks to headline 2014 concerts

It’s Secret City Festival time again in Oak Ridge! The bands have been selected, the schedule is filling up, and tickets to this year’s headliner concerts go on sale today (Tuesday, April 29). Tickets are priced at an early bird rate of $18. After May 30, ticket prices go up to $20. Children 10 and under are free with a paying adult.

Grammy-nominated ’80s rocker Eddie Money will bring his blue-collar brand of rock ‘n’ roll to the concert main stage on Friday, June 13, at 7 p.m. The Friday night concert also features local band Jada Blade.

Legendary country music artist Kix Brooks will bring his high energy, hit-filled show to the main stage Saturday, June 14, at 7 p.m. The Saturday night concert will feature opening band Phoenix Drive. [Read more…]

Make plans now to join Emory Valley Center on Friday, May 2, for a “Celebrate Spring” fundraising event. Proceeds will benefit the ongoing Capital Campaign for a new building to better serve children and adults with disabilities.

The Knights of Columbus of St. Mary’s Church are partnering with Emory Valley Center for the event, which will be held in the St. Mary’s Church Gym from 6–8:30 p.m. and feature a full-course meal they will prepare. Tickets are currently on sale and only $25 each. Attendees will be served their buffet-style meal by youth of St. Mary’s Church, enjoy musical entertainment by the band Early Bird Special, and have the opportunity to participate in a silent auction. Some of the silent auction items donated by local supporters and friends include jewelry, a variety of art items, golf rounds, restaurant certificates, area attraction tickets, “themed” baskets, and more. A special screening of “Legends of the Knight,” a documentary by acclaimed filmmaker Brett Culp, will be held at the Historic Grove Theater on Sunday, and it will benefit a local nonprofit.

“Legends of the Knight” weaves together the uplifting true stories of individuals who have overcome devastating obstacles, unselfishly given to the community, and embraced their inner superhero because of their love of Batman, a press release said.

The screening starts at 3:45 p.m. Sunday at the Grove Theater, which is at 123 Randolph Road. It will benefit Aid to Distressed Families of Appalachian Counties, or ADFAC. [Read more…]

UT Arboretum to have presentation on bats on Thursday

The University of Tennessee Arboretum will host a presentation on bats—“Let’s Go BAT-ty”—from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Gerry Middleton, a biologist who has studied bats extensively, will present a slide show at the Visitor’s Center to discuss his two-year study of Arboretum bats. Using his “bat detector,” he will take the group outside to look for the nocturnal creatures.

A biologist with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation in the U.S. Department of Energy-Oversight Office, Middleton promised that this will be an opportunity for all ages to learn more about the local bat population, a press release said. Middleton has an master’s degree in wildlife and fisheries from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. [Read more…]
