American Idol finalist Janelle Arthur is expected to play in Oliver Springs at 1 p.m. today during the October Sky Festival.
Arthur had been part of the first-ever all-female Top 5 on the popular televised singing competition in April.
The 6th Annual October Sky Fall Festival started at 9 a.m. today (Saturday) and continues through 4 p.m.

Singing, dancing, and comedy—coupled with great food and celebrity entertainment—will kick off the first Youth Showcase on Nov. 2, a benefit for the Child Advocacy Center of Anderson County.
The fundraiser for CACACT will feature some of the area’s most talented youth, a press release said. It starts at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at the High Places Community Church in Historic Grove Center in Oak Ridge.
The young performers include ballet dancer Taylor Gober and singer/songwriters Nic Cagle, Taylor Kress (who has also appeared on WDVX), and Lara Manning. Two voice majors from UT, Breyon Lattrell Wess and Taylor Stone, and other local singers Maddie and Sydney Buckner will also perform. [Read more…]

The internationally renowned Oak Ridge bassist and composer Edgar Meyer, winner of four Grammy awards, will open the Oak Ridge Civic Music Association’s Chamber Music Series with a one-man concert at 7:30 p.m. today (Saturday) at the Oak Ridge High School Performing Arts Center.
Meyer, who grew up in Oak Ridge and graduated from Oak Ridge High School, plays a unique role in the contemporary music scene, with compositions and performances in both classical and jazz traditions, and even in some remarkable combinations of both. He was hailed by the “New Yorker” as “…the most remarkable virtuoso in the…history of his instrument.”
As a solo classical bassist, Meyer has released a concerto album with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra featuring Bottesini’s “Gran Duo” with well-known violinist Joshua Bell, Meyer’s own “Double Concerto for Bass and Cello” with internationally renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma, Bottesini’s “Bass Concerto No. 2,” and Meyer’s “Concerto in D for Bass.” [Read more…]
Singer and songwriter Brad Austin will play a free concert tonight (Saturday) at Community Coffee Café in Oak Ridge.
The show starts at 9.m. The café is at 32 N. Jefferson Circle.
Austin is a Knoxville folk and Christian pop musician who will support 555 with tonight’s show and debut songs for his new album, a press release said. It will be his first Oak Ridge show in three years. [Read more…]

In celebration of National Coming Out Day, Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church will present a choral concert headlined by the Knoxville Gay Men’s Chorus, under the direction of Freddie Brabson. The concert is at 7 p.m. today at ORUUC. Tickets are $5.
Proceeds will go to the Gay/Straight Alliance at Oak Ridge High School. ORUUC is located at 1500 Oak Ridge Turnpike.
There will also be featured performances by musicians from other area Unitarian Universalist churches, including the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church choir, the new Foothills Unitarian Universalist Fellowship choir, ORUUC’s own Mighty Choir, as well as musical selections from members of The Westside Unitarian Universalist Church. Edgar Meyer
Edgar Meyer, the world-renowned bassist and composer, will start this year’s ORCMA Chamber Music Season with a Saturday night performance.
The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Oak Ridge High School Performing Arts Center.
Meyer grew up in Oak Ridge, where he learned to play the double bass when he was five. He was taught by his father, the late Edgar Meyer Sr., who directed the string orchestra program for the Oak Ridge Schools. Meyer later went on to Indiana University to study with Stuart Sankey.
“Meyer is noted for achieving virtuosity on an instrument of unusual technical difficulty, and has performed music originally composed for other instruments, such as Bach’s unaccompanied cello suites, which he recorded,” a press release said. “He has also composed a number of classical works, including two double bass concertos, a string quintet, a double concerto for bass and cello, and a violin concerto.” [Read more…]

Despite the federal shutdown, the Museum of Appalachia near Norris is still open, and the 34th annual Tennessee Fall Homecoming is happening this weekend, officials said.
The Fall Homecoming is scheduled from Friday, Oct. 11, to Sunday, Oct. 13. It will feature more than 400 traditional musicians, singers, cloggers, and buck dancers, a press release said.
It said the three-day Homecoming is one of the nation’s largest, most authentic music and folk festivals.
“Each day, all day, musicians perform on five unique stages, filling the air with bluegrass, old-time, Southern gospel, and Americana music,” the release said. “Homecoming includes historic demonstrations of mountain skills, Revolutionary War and Civil War encampments, and a large arts and crafts fair featuring authentic Appalachian artisans. Pinto beans cooked over an open fire, home-made ice cream, Dutch oven cobbler, sassafras tea, and barbecue are some of the southern delicacies available for purchase.” [Read more…]

The Oak Ridge Community Band will present an “Early Music” Concert on Oct. 13 at Oak Ridge High School.
The concert starts at 3:30 p.m. in the ORHS Performing Arts Center at 1450 Oak Ridge Turnpike.
This concert is the first of six indoor concerts in the “Music for a Lifetime” series scheduled for October, November, December, January, February, and April. These concerts will take the audience from early compositions up to the 1890s, then continue through the 20th century featuring the roaring ’20s, Big Band era on through the Nifty Fifties, Swinging Sixties, Generation X, and ending with music representing the New Millenium. The 13th Annual Clinch River Antiques Festival kicks off on Friday evening, Oct. 11, from 6–9 p.m. in Historic Downtown Clinton with shops open late, food vendors, carriage rides, and live entertainment.
The entertainment starts Friday evening in Hoskins Lane Park on Market Street with The Real McCoys, a bluegrass band that grew up playing music together in Lake City. The flavors from some of Oak Ridge’s best restaurants and the sounds of local musicians will fill Jackson Square for the fifth annual “Taste of Oak Ridge” on Saturday, Sept. 28. The highly anticipated event will start at 4:30 p.m. and continue to 10 p.m.
While area restaurants will be able to showcase some of their finest food in small portions or ” tastes,” the community-focused event will raise money to benefit the Free Medical Clinic of Oak Ridge. The “tastes” from each vendor will cost $1 or $2 per item. Tickets will be available for purchase. Attendees can buy as many tickets as they want for $1 each.
