UT Singers, the University of Tennessee’s jazz choir
The UT Singers, the University of Tennessee’s jazz choir, will present their last concert of the season at Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church.
The choir is directed by Wendel Werner, and the concert starts at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 6. The community is invited, and there is no cost to attend, a press release said.

The Ulster Project of East Tennessee will host “Taste of Ireland”—a “sense-sational” celebration—on Saturday, April 5, from 6 to 10 p.m. in the Family Life Center at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oak Ridge. Co-sponsored by the Knoxville and Oak Ridge chapters, the event will feature traditional Irish food and drink, live music, dance, and a silent auction.
Special musical guests, the local Irish/folk band, Shamrock Road, will entertain. Enjoy a buffet of traditional Irish favorite dishes and dessert between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. Visit any of the four traditional Irish watering holes for something to accompany your meal or to quench your thirst from dancing a jig.
A “Taste of Ireland” is the perfect way to welcome spring and support the efforts to grow and sustain the peace process in Northern Ireland. Doric String Quartet
The Oak Ridge Civic Music Association’s Chamber Series concert on Saturday features the Doric String Quartet. The concert will start at 7:30 p.m. at Oak Ridge Associated Universities Pollard Auditorium.
The Doric members are Alex Redington and Jonathan Stone, violins; Hélène Clément, viola; and John Myerscough, cello. The program includes Haydn’s String Quartet in B-flat, Opus 76 No. 4 “Sunrise”; Leos Janacek’s String Quartet No. 1 “Kreutzer Sonata”; and the Franz Schubert Quartet in G (D. 887).
The group spends time sharing their talents, techniques, and musical wisdom with young musicians in the area. Oak Ridge Symphony cellist Alicia Randisi-Hooker and her “Cello Leap Studio” is making arrangements for the quartet’s weeklong residency here. [Read more…]

The Grove Theater will host a fundraising talent show on Friday that will feature 10 groups from Oak Ridge and East Tennessee.
The show, called “Oak Ridge Has Talent,” starts at 7 p.m. Friday. It will mark the kickoff of Friends of the Grove Theater, a new nonprofit organization dedicated to maintain the Historic Grove Theater as a performing arts center for the Oak Ridge area.
Representatives from Sound Company Children’s Youth Choir will perform along with ensembles from Oak Ridge Community Band, Oak Ridge Symphony, and dancers from the Oak Ridge Civic Ballet. Bands will include the Ridge City Ramblers, an Oak Ridge Bluegrass band; the MOOD, a classic rock band; and an Irish music session representing the Traditional Irish Arts of Knoxville. Miss East Tennessee Scholarship Talent winners will also perform, and a distinctive surprise from the Emory Valley Center is planned. The Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra will turn Saturday night into a magnificent musical evening when the Oak Ridge Civic Music Association presents a program of Verdi, Gorecki, and Shostakovich at the Oak Ridge High School Performing Arts Center.
Joining the orchestra for the concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday will be the Oak Ridge Chorus along with the South Doyle High School Chorus for Giuseppe Verdi’s “Stabat Mater” and “Te Deum.”
Symphony conductor Dan Allcott wanted to do a Verdi choral work and chose these works in celebration of Verdi’s 200th birthday year. “The ‘Stabat Mater’ is one of my favorite works by the composer,” Allcott said. “Verdi was a small town boy who had a great work ethic, having composed 30 operas in his lifetime. An Oak Ridge talent show and pub quiz night will benefit the historic, renovated Grove Theater on March 28 and 29.
On Friday, March 28, the new nonprofit organization Friends of the Grove Theater will have a showcase titled “Oak Ridge Has Talent.” It will benefit the Grove, a legacy of the Manhattan Project era that is celebrating 70 years of history and a decade since its re-opening by High Places Community Church, a press release said.
The Manhattan Project was a top-secret federal program to build the world’s first atomic bombs during World War II.
All proceeds from the March 28 show at the Grove will be used to maintain the facility as a performing arts center for Oak Ridge and East Tennessee organizations, the press release said. The show starts at 7 p.m., and it will include performances from community partners and other locals who want to support the Grove. Comedian and humorist Tyler Gooch will entertain between acts. In a free Saturday afternoon concert, the Oak Ridge Community Orchestra will play Spanish music written by some very famous composers.
The provocative Spanish flavor can be savored in “España” by Chabrier, “Capriccio Espagnole” by Rimsky-Korsakov, “Malagueña” by Lecuona/Grofé, “Boléro” by Ravel, and “Andalucia” by Lecuona/Gould, a press release said.
“Just a few opening bars in each of these compositions will be enough to awake your heart to the welcome return of an old favorite,” the press release said.
The concert starts at 2 p.m. Saturday in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church of Oak Ridge on the corner of the Oak Ridge Turnpike and LaFayette Drive. Admission is free. But, modest donations at the door to support the orchestra’s routine operating expenses will be appreciated. [Read more…]
The Oak Ridge High School Band will play in a rescheduled concert at 7 p.m. today (Tuesday) at the Historic Grove Theater.
The band includes 29 students who earned chairs through auditions to participate in the annual ETSBOA All East Clinic.
“We had the second largest number of band students from any school to participate in the event and had players on flute, B-flat and bass clarinet, bassoon, alto and baritone sax, trumpet, horn, trombone, baritone, tuba, and percussion,” a press release said. “Directors Spence Milligan and Mike Spirko would like to invite you to come enjoy the combined talents of these students and the entire ORHS Band.”

The Oak Ridge Civic Music Association will present a free Coffee Concert at 7:30 p.m. Sunday in the First Presbyterian Church sanctuary, located at the corner of Lafayette and Oak Ridge Turnpike.
Preston Davis will perform on double bass along with Will Yager on double bass and Pam Robertson on piano.
They will perform Bach’s “Double Violin Concerto” arranged for double bass and piano, as well as G. Bottesini’s “Passiona Amorosa.” Their musical selection will also include performing other double-bass arrangements.
A trumpet ensemble that includes a former Oak Ridge student at Emory and Henry College has been selected to perform at the 2014 International Trumpet Guild Conference, a prestigious event that attracts the best trumpet performers from colleges and universities in the United States and abroad.
The E&H musicians who will be attending the conference include Chris Gillenwaters, a first-year student from Oak Ridge.
The conference, which will be held in May at Valley Forge, Pa., is known for including schools with the strongest instrumental music programs, including Baylor, Northwestern, and Florida State universities, as well as the universities of Louisville, North Texas and Oklahoma, the college said. International institutions that have often participated in the conference include the Lyon Conservatoire in France and the Escola Superior de Music e Artes do Espetaco in Spain. [Read more…]

The fourth annual Oak Ridge Rock to Bach Music Festival is Saturday.
Rock to Bach is an all-day music festival presented by the Oak Ridge Civic Music Association as a benefit for ORCMA music organizations, such as the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, and the world-class Chamber Music Series.
Eighteen groups will perform this Saturday, playing pop, rock, blues, bluegrass, folk, jazz, Celtic, patriotic, Dixieland, swing, klezmer, and classical music.
The festival is scheduled from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the New Hope Center near the main entrance to the Y-12 National Security Complex. The New Hope Center is next to Scarboro Road, just across from the intersection with Union Valley Road.
Among the performing groups and performers are the Tennessee Schmalz, Knoxville Youth Jazz Orchestra, Early Bird Special Band, Liz and Tim, Jack Russell and the Terriers, Kukuly and Gypsy Fuego, Walker Marema, Silver Winds Choir, and singers with the Oak Ridge Chorus who will perform selections from musicals, operas, and operettas. Join area physicians and health professionals for a rockin’ good time at “Doc Rock for Health” on Saturday, March 1, in Knoxville’s Old City at “NV” at 125 E. Jackson Ave. (across from Barley’s). Doc Rock features six bands that represent several area hospitals. Each band will play a 45-minute set and compete to win cover charge proceeds, which will benefit their favorite health-based charity.
The local physician band Second Opinion will be playing to support Methodist Medical Center’s Hospitality Houses. These houses primarily provide free lodging to families and patients who travel to Methodist for cancer treatment. The Hospitality Houses have been home to nearly 4,000 guests since opening in 1997.
Second Opinion’s Doc Rock performance will include Methodist Medical Center physicians: gastroenterologist Ken Luckmann, MD; and retired otolaryngologist John Jernigan, MD; plus Parkwest radiologist Daryl Harp, MD; along with friends of Methodist: Melissa Carter, Tim Comer, David Lynch, Larry Sheumaker, and Todd Wright.
